Re: Ice Hockey

As it seemed likely for the whole season Kärpät is the champion 2008, for fifth time in team's history.

In tha last game 5 Blues fought well for first period winning it 1-0, but in 2nd all hell broke loose and Kärpät scored four times. After that there wasn't much fight left and the only goal of last period was with goalie off.

Blues did some miracles coming this far (gaining team's first ever medal), but Kärpät continues the dynasty it's held on this decade.

...and the games are on!
 :fight: :fight: :fight:

Denmark lasted one period against Czech before the expected slaugter started; more than I expected from them.

Not very exciting games tonight... unless Latvia can put up a fight against USA.

edit:
No surprises so far. Belarus got so close to beat Sweden, but... 6-5. Darn.

Still no surprises (I really should've bet on these), but what a game between Czech and Russia.
That what I call ice hockey emoticon

Do you get to watch the world championships over there? All we get is 1 NHL game every week and the winter olympics Ice hockey when it's on. Oh also we get a British game a week but that's very poor and is very slow.

If I'm not mistaken, we get every single game of the WCs.

I think this is first time ever, unless it was already last year.

In Finland there's actually a law that if commercial channels don't do so on their free channels, government controlled channels must show "culturally important sports events". So far these are considered to include olympics, soccer world cup and all Finland's games in ice hockey WC's (plus final, I assume).

So it's legally required us to be able to see them

On the other hand we haven't gotten regular NHL for few years, it's usually just Stanley Cup. Rest would be on pay channels.

The only international match I've ever watched was Sweden V Finland in the winter olympics final 2 years ago. I forgot to watch the other games and it would be hard to record them anyway because it was only available via the red button (interactive). I think Sweden won 3-2. Back in 2002 I always watched the highlights of the games.

Finland-Norway 3-2 overtime... that is just embarrassing. But Slovakia did worse, losing to Germany 4-2.
Now if Finland wins Slovakia (very possible) and Norway wins Germany (might happen) Slovakia won't make it to the continuing top 12!
That would be biggest upset of the games; they are one of the seven clearly strongest countries.

:yikes: I would have thought Norway would have had a good ice hockey team since Sweden and Finland do. Shame since I used to 'know' someone from Trondheim in Norway.

Norway seems to be improving; Denmark too.

Yesterday was the second big game of the tournament: Canada-USA 5-4
Surprisingly USA was better for most of the game but the goalies settled it.

So far we have 4 clear favourites to win this tournament: Canada, USA, Czech and Russia.

Finland could barely fight Norway, Sweden had trouble with Belarus and Slovakia lost to Germany.

So far Slovenia and Italy are out; France and Belarus play today for being in top 12 and not having to qualify for next year.
And today two very decisive games:
Finland-Slovakia and Norway-Germany
Only Finland is safe now; one of the other 3 will fall tonight.
