Dammit, CHL draw puts Finns against each other.
Well, one loses and one wins, average result, but pity anyway. And no other teams play their countrymen.

3 Czech, 2 Swedish and Swiss and 1 Finnish team continue to CHL quarterfinals.

That's bad news for us, Finnish league is likely to have only 4 teams in CHL next season while Czech or Swiss league gets a fifth. And due the scoring, that's difficult to take back in future.

There'll be a new champion this season, none of the remaining 8 teams hes been in finals before.

Hope still lives with one Finnish team JYP in CHL semifinals. Others remaining are Swedish and two Czech teams, so there's pretty big chance that Czech league takes that one spot from Finns for next season. Swiss league is also close.

JYP goes to CHL final! emoticon emoticon

On fourth season of CHL, this is second time a Finnish team is in final.
Swedish have won the three first and again JYP's opponent is a Swedish team - Växjö who currently lead Swedish hockey League with wide margin...

At least we seem to have kept 5 places in the league.

KHL season of Helsinki Jokerit ended today in quarterfinals.
They'll rank 5th and tie with their previous best result from their first season.

KeuPa wins Mestis championship!!!

 emoticon emoticon emoticon

Now let me explain that.

Mestis - short for Mestaruussarja, "Championship series" - is the second-highest ice hockey league in Finland.

KeuPa is team from neighboring town (where mom is from btw) Keuruu.

Winning Mestis makes KeuPa (at least) 17th best team in Finland, following the 15 Liiga teams and Jokerit in KHL.
Keuruu is about 100th biggest town in Finland (by population). And the 16 teams above KeuPa include two pairs from same town, so Keuruu is now hockey town #15.
And it's not like there are teams just here and there (hell, Mänttä-Vilppula has two). There's about as many hockey teams as there are towns in Finland.

Also, just about five years ago KeuPa, then playing a tier lower, was near bankruptcy and had to do a crowd-funding to continue playing there. Then they win that level (Suomi-sarja) to rise to Mestis and couple years later... this.

There are couple explanations for this. Firstly, along last few years Liiga has expanded, taking away three formerly best teams of Mestis. Secondly, KeuPa started cooperation with Liiga team JYP (CHL champion!), becoming their farm team.

But this is still the greatest Cinderella story ever on this level.

Ak Bars Kazan takes KHL championship, games 4-1.

I'd call this even bigger surprise than CSKA Moscow beating SKA St. Petersburg in West Conference final. Kazan was the East Conference top team and 4th best of all in regular season, but even so I didn't expect they could win CSKA. But they were close games, all by goal or two.

Kazan has previously won KHL championship 2009 and 2010 - first two seasons of the series - and two pre-KHL Russian championships (1998, 2006).

Växjö Lakers who lost to JYP in CHL finals took Swedish championship, humiliating Skellefteå AIK in four games: 7-0, 0-4, 4-1, 0-5

Finnish Liiga ended today with Kärpät defeating Tappara in 6th game.

Tappara won last two championships (becoming the most successful team in history), while Kärpät had won twice before that.

This is 8th championship for Kärpät.
