Re: Ice Hockey

Junior world championship was another disaster for Finland. After last year's glorious championship, we lost 3 of 4 preliminary games and failed to make it to QFs, ending 9th out of 10 after defeating Latvia to avoid relegation.
At the same time Denmark makes 5th, perhaps their best placing ever in any high level hockey competition.
On the other hand Norway was hit by total disaster, losing Division I A (16th in total ranking) drops them to I B.
UK also did bad, losing I B and falling for next year to II A.
Division III (where SA plays) will be played later.

On the above: SA was last.

CHL ended today, disappointingly with a Swedish team winning. Frölunda HC took second consecutive championship.
Sparta Prague did miracles one after another, beat assumably stronger opponents in every playoff round, but fell one goal short.
Frölunda won final 4-3 overtime.

As first British team, Nottingham Panthers has won the Continental Cup, tournament now played for 20th time. This means they are qualified for next CHL season, so UK will have 2 teams (instead of 1 like Norwegian, Slovakian, French, Belarusian, Danish, and Polish leagues).

KHL regular season ended today and four of the seven non-Russian teams made it to playoffs.
Finland's own Helsinki Jokerit and Chinese Kunlun Red Star - the team with second-most Finnish players - both just barely made it, being 8th in their conferences. Which means they'll face toughest possible opponents in first round.
Other two non-Russians are Dinamo Minsk of Belarus and Barys Astana of Kazakhstan, both 5th of their conference.

Well that's the end of season for Jokerit. They lost straight 4-0 to regular season top team CSKA Moscow, but did give a good fight: last three games they lost overtime.
But this was worse season for them than the previous two.

Women's World Championship going on and we've had couple shockers.
Germany won Sweden and Finland lost to Russia; both unexpected, but the big one came last night:
Finland won Canada! This is first time ever in an official tournament that Canada has lost to anyone besides USA! And on regular time too, not just shootout or something.
emoticon emoticon

Sadly that's not (probably) going to make any difference for final standings, unless there'll be another as big surprise. But it's an encouraging sign that any year now it finally won't be another USA-Canada final anymore.

The semifinals will be Canada-Finland and USA-... Germany?!

Although Germany is almost certainly 4th, that's still a huge step for team that just climbed from lower division (therefore being essentially 9th last year) and it ensures place in next two tournaments. Which is also handy because 2019 they may expand to 10 from current 8 teams.

In the preliminary game Finland won Canada as first European team during the whole 27-year history. To stop the eternal series of USA-Canada finals, we'd need to do it second time in row. Odds are against, but considering the good fight Finland put against USA (5-3 that was still tied 10 minutes before end) we're playing better than ever.

World championship tournament has started and first surprise was host Germany beating USA.
Finland just barely won Belarus in our opening, but still full points.

Well that was a disaster. Finland lost first time in WC history to France, and with ugly numbers too.
I don't think we can expect a medal this year. Russia, Canada, Sweden and perhaps Czech look real tough.
