Who plays for them? Since all the top players are playing in the NHL playoffs at the moment.

A night of huge upsets! emoticon

SLOVAKIA IS OUT!!!

Afte Finland wins Slovakia 3-2 and Norway amazingly beats Germany with same score, Slovakia doesn't make it to top 12!

Also: Switzerland wins Sweden 4-2 and is the only team besides Canada to continue with clean record.

See here who's playing

Aha so I see it's generally young players and players whose team isn't in the playoffs. Thanks for that Kaunisto. emoticon

Note: Sergei Fedorov has previously only played in WCs 1989 and 1990, on both years winning gold with USSR (though he has been twice in Russian olympics team).

It's always a silly waiting game as most teams keep place or two open for last minute help from NHL (like Saku Koivu for Finland now).

Time of miracles seems to be over. Norway gave great fight, but Canada barely won 2-1. USA had some trouble with germany, but won 6-4.
Sweden crushed Denmark 8-1 and Czech took Switzerland clean 5-0.

It now seems very propable the team to continue to quarterfinals are:
Canada, USA, Finland and Norway (these will play each other)
and
Czech, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland

By the way, I don't like the new system where quarterfinals are played between countries that have already played in preliminary or qualification rounds.

Finland had hard time with Latvia, only winning 2-1.
But Russia did even worse against Belarus, only winning in penalty soot out after 3-3 game. Losing a point there will propably cost Russia by having a harder opponent in quarterfinal. Belarus holds a small chance of getting to quarterfinal, but they need to win Czech tomorrow.

Tonight Slovenia-Slovakia and France-Italy play for place in next years WCs (not yet settled in these games).

Re: Ice Hockey

Last night Finland had the ugliest game of the tournament against USA. Not only the game had propably most penalties in the games, Finland also won 3-2 because of a ridiculous referee error: first goal was accepted despite the puck entered goal through net. In the second goal also I thought there was offside (and so clearly did one US player).
quote:

The IIHF formally acknowledged after the game that Koistinen's shot had, indeed, entered the side of the net and should not have counted, and the video-goal judge will not be working for the rest of the tournament.

After leading 2-0 at the start of 3rd period, these were too much for the americans and things just blew up at the last seconds (or rather right after).

Today are the last games before playoffs and it's still unclear who'll play who in quarterfinals. Also one place is still open since Latvia surprisingly won Norway; if Norway loses today to USA and Latvia wins Germany, Latvia will take the last place in top 8 and null Norway's great effords in these games.

Slovenia and Italy lost twice to Slovakia and France and are out of next year's games.
Hungary and Austria were promoted from division I.

Latvia was 20 minutes from quarterfinals, leading 3-2 after two periods, but Germany scored three times in last and saved Norway.

QFs will be:

Russia - Switzerland (Russia won their last game only 5-3, but this should be clear)
Finland - USA (a helluva rematch)

Czech Republic - Sweden (I'd bet on Czech... but not much)
Canada - Norway (slaughter)

Standings 9-16:

9. Belarus
10. Germany
11. Latvia
12. Denmark
13. Slovakia
14. France
15. Slovenia
16. Italy

Mostly what was to be expected; only for Slovakia this was a disaster and great success to Norway that has been in top 8 only once in last 40 years.

Good luck Finland. You'll need it as USA are are great team. But so are Finland so it should be a cracker for you Kaunisto. I heard Britain go through to the world championships, is this true? I mean Britain is pathetic at ice hockey.

Here's the result of Division I this year
I think that means Great Britain was by the official count 23th this year.

As I said before, Hungary and Austria got to the next championships (while Slovenia and Italy are out).

Here's some clips on the pages of Finnish TV

I don't know if this'll work but
the Finland - USA game should be live in internet on this link
It starts at midnight GMT (except I can't right now figure how times work with daylight savings and where is it used, so check that from somewhere).
