Ice Hockey

A few years ago, Some of the citizens of the village of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick, were looking for a way of raising money to build an arena. They tried a snowmobile drag-racing event on adjacent Roulston Lake. “It was fun,” says Danny Braun, one of the plan’s champions. “But it didn’t make any money. So we thought, well, this is Canada, and there’s ice, so we better play hockey.”

Today, pond hockey is a major event in Canada and the championships are just starting to get underway. Will post some interesting videos and pictures as they become available.

That looks so emoticon if you'll pardon the pun!! It must be a fun sport for everyone in the neighbourhood to enjoy when the ponds freeze over.
Snow always looks so romantic - except when it thaws I suppose. And ice too.
Canada certainly is beautiful.

It's real pretty until you get 2 storms a week for a month - is it Spring yet?

A few years ago, we had a small ice storm and as I was driving home from work that afternoon, all the trees had a glaze of ice covering them. Everything looked like it was made of glass as the late afternoon Sun sparkled through the ice. I thought to myself at the moment how lucky I was to live here. When I got home, the power was out and the house was 40 degrees F. That feeling disappeared real quick.

Skokey, we are all starting to wish for spring, here it rains until after our Canada Day weekend and if we are really very lucky it will only start raining once the kids go back to school. We are actually enjoying the colder temperatures this year and the record number of snowstorms we've had so far.

Time to dig up the hockey thread. NHL play offs are coming and so are world championships soon enough.

At the moment Finnish championship finals are at game 3. The favourite is Kärpät (Stoats), the most northern team from Oulu. They have long history, although spend couple decades in lower division. But since returning to league, they've had much success during last ten years. Their challenger is Blues from Espoo, a newer team that in fact is in the final for first time ever. They defeated Helsinki Jokerit (Jokers) in 7 game semi-finals, miraculously after being down 3-1.
My own favourite team Tappara (Battleaxe) from Tampere won Jokerit in bronze game.
Kärpät won the first game 3-1 and the second 2-1 after a thriller that continued for half an hour overtime.

The two finalist teams will be playing in the new ]Champions Hockey League.

For those who've only followed olympic news: China is also hosting right now Women's World Ice Hockey Championships and I've got news from there.
has first time ever won USA
In all 10 previous WWIHC the final has been Canada-USA (Canada winning 9 of those) and Finland has always played in bronze game, winning 7. But now Canada-Finland final is likely, though yet far from certain.

Interesting, all we get over here is the NHL and some non-live british ice hockey which I must say is poor. So it's nice to know about the Finnish league.

Game 3 was awesome; went again to overtime after severel great saves from both goalies in 3rd. At 76 minutes Blues took it 3-2 after having been down 0-2 after first period.
]The little one in the corner of this page is the only video I could find; some highlights there.

Just noticed a sports channel has Swiss National League A finals going on; today it's game 6. I'll have to watch the last game/s.

In world championships good news to SA:
Africa up to Div. II

And just saw this: those ¤&¤%/¤/#¤* Canadian ¤&#>%es just HAD TO lose to USA and for the 11th time Finland is in the bronze game of women's world championships.
and Canada to play for gold

No, I think the Swiss league was the only one this year; perhaps some finals from others, but not likely live. There have been many Finnish players there and indeed yesterday the Finnish goalie ]Ari Sulander won the championship with ZSC Lions (Zürich) in a penalty shootout of game 6.

Swiss league has reputation here as the place where old stars go when they can't make it in NHL and want to make some money for few more years.

Game 4 in Finnish finals was good for two periods, but in last blues was broken and Kärpät eventually won 4-0.

It's such a pity that way down south here, we seldom get to see any Ice Hockey on TV. And of course because we have such a warm climate, I don't think that ice hockey is played here at all, or if it is, it's on a very small scale and we never get to hear about it. There's even a pretty low profile on outdoor hockey played on grass.

The most popular sports here are football, rugby, cricket, athletics - all outdoor sports. We never have ski-ing, snowboarding, skating, or anything like that - too much sunshine I guess but I'm not complaining about that at all!
