If you could make one place independent

Gets a bit political, but what the heck.

You have power to grant any area in the world independence and every country in the world must recognize it, which one you choose?

It can be a country already recognized by some but not all countries - even just one, there are several such cases - or some part of a country seeking independence, a country that has existed before... or just your own house.

Anyone living in the area can choose to keep old citizenship (if they have one) or take one of the newly created country.

Aside nearby islands, the area must be united. It may not contain more than half (by area or population) of more than one country.
(So you can't unite several countries as a new one.)

I don't believe in national identities. We're all one species living on the same planet. We should just remove all borders and identities and be one society.

You know, in the scifi book Ringworld (which I just reread) that's pretty much the situation - as result of teleportation allowing instant travel.

Whether or not that exact technology can ever be created, the key to a borderless world is development of fast and cheap methods of transport. The further and faster things and people can move, the less meaning has geography.

Though I don't believe that'll rid us of identities, they'll just chance to some other tribal divide.

To my question, I have couple candidates. Tibet would be tempting. Biafra, Western Sahara for some kind of resolution of the conflicts...
From personal point of view, I'd like to create Karelia as bumper state between Finland and Russia. Or join Lapland of Norway, Sweden and Finland plus Russian Kola as a Sami state.

But to pick one, my sympathy is on Kurdistan. Join Iraqi Kurdistan (exact borders to be argued) with bits of Syria, Turkey and Iran.
Those people have had it bad enough in all the countries.

Re:

The trouble with national identities is that it creates a "them" and "us" situation. The out group are bad, the in group are good, no matter how good or bad the policies are. I'm just watching Zimbabwe falling apart after election-rigging, and a win by the "wrong" party resulted from yesterday's elections. If there were no out groups, and we could go wherever we wanted, and there was work and a place to live wherever we went, I don't know.

The trouble is that we are territorial animals. We protect our personal environment and possessions as individuals, so it gets bigger, the identity, as our environment gets bigger: our street, our suburb, our town, our political party, our province, our country...

People always have different and inevitably sometimes conflicting interests. Those with common interest ally to overpower those with rival interest.
Grouping happens in some form or other.

This can only be avoided in an utopistic scenario where unimaginable technology provides (virtually) infinite energy and infinite resources (Star Trek style replicator that can make literally anything from anything with same amount of subatomic particles) and to everyone ability to turn their bodies to whatever height, color, sex and species they want (including so far non-existing).
Though to be realistic, even then people would come up with plenty of ideological things to fight about.
