Re: Family History

I'm pretty sure I never did mention the old name. It's Helander, a Swedish style name.

Quick look to online archives didn't give any details, but the name seems to most appear in southwest Finland, around old capital Turku.
There was a medieval "highway" from there to somewhat this direction.

Sorry Leo I'm a little lost here. Which photo? My brain is focusing on packing boxes at the moment.

You mentioned that you have a pic of yourself next to Oliver Goldsmith's statue in Dublin, and that you were going to look for it.

Couldn't have been me in Dublin. I've never been there.

D'oh, I've rechecked the thread and I realise that I should have addressed Petal! I can be a daft apeth sometimes. I think I assumed her post was a continuation of yours above for some reason.

So, Petal, did you find that picture? emoticon

Re: Family History

Doesn't really tell much about family history, but today I looked through a "collection" of old coins, possibly gathered by my grand uncle, along early 20th century.

A similar handful has been in my home for decades, not sure if dad and late uncle divided them on purpose or if two boxes of them just ended in different places. (With the ones that have been at our place, there's an inventory list that seems to match this other pile.)

Anyways, these are bit of a history lesson.
Couple oldest are from Swedish era, during Gustav III and Gustav IV Adolf.
One coin from Russian/autonomy era before Finnish Mark (1865-) and couple later.
Mostly they are Finnish coins, some with insignia of the last two Czars Alexander III and Nicholas II.
There are few WWII era (also WWI?) coins with holes (Finnish and foreign).
Various coins from Sweden, Norway, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Germany, France...
Among interesting ones: Austrian 1917 and 1942 one from Bohemia and Moravia. And one Estonian 1922.

Re: Re:

A digital photo of the photo?

I found out yesterday that my great great grandma was a suffragist. My great aunt (sister of my Granddad who has recently died) told my dad this in an e-mail and said that she'd be willing to say more at the funeral (she has done some research on this side). She also had long, flowing red hair, so the trait still lives on. This was not known information to us, since my dad never knew her and she didn't have the best relationship with my great grandma (her daughter). My great grandma said that she was a snob who said that no-one would have been good enough for her daughter. This was in reference to her not approving of her choice of husband.

To be fair, my great grandma was 16 when she married and had to run away to get married. I can understand why my great great grandma was maybe displeased, especially if she came from a suffragist background. She might have wanted more for her daughter than to aspire to marry young and have a family young, hindering anything more. Then there was the fact that my great granddad came from a travelling family and was half Romany. That may have generated concerns over whether he was the right man. She needn't have worried though, since my great granddad was a lovely man and the marriage lasted until death, but she wasn't to know that.

Looking back I have quite a few activists in my family history with her on my father's side and the trade unionists and socialists on my mother's side.

I'm the only one in my immediate family. My kids' wives though, they are all strong independent-minded liberated women. The rest of the women in our generation in our families are all mealy-mouthed "yes sir" type women who wait on their men hand-and-foot and who give in to the man's needs every time.

We should figure out something for you.

I've used tinypic.com and it's worked well enough for me.
You don't have to register to use it - but I don't know how long they'll keep the ones uploaded unregistered. Then again that's no real issue when you just want to show us something.

Don't think I can find any activists from my family, poor peasants on both sides.
