Let's talk about America's gun laws

Just seen on the news there's been ANOTHER school shooting in America, the 18th so far this year. Something really needs to be done about America's gun laws, it's far too easy for people to get their hands on these dangerous weapons. I understand people have the right to defend themselves, but using violence should be a last resort.

School shootings should not be the main argument - or even a major one - in deciding suitable level of gun control. As dramatic as they are, they make up small percentage of all gun-related deaths.
Though I admit they are significant regarding whether certain specific types of weapons should be banned entirely.

For gun license, Finnish law requires applicant to state purpose for getting the weapon. "Self defense" is not accepted as reason to have gun.

I tend to think that while USA need more strict gun laws, pretty much all other countries could do with less than currently.
On the other hand, Japan does show what extremely tight gun ban can achieve.

You're never going to change the mindset of people who believe a 1774 well-armed militia means you should be allowed to carry ak-47s into public places. I've given up. I don't even talk to them about it anymore.

Australia tightened its gun laws in the mid-90s after 35 people, including Nanette Mikac and her two young daughters, Alannah and Madeline (aged 6 and 3) were murdered in the Port Arthur massacre. Our National Firearms Programme Implementation Act restricts private ownership of semi-automatic rifles, semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns. There was also the introduction of uniform firearms licensing.

Following the massacre, over 600,000 guns were handed in and destroyed. The Alannah and Madeline Foundation works to support and protect child victims of violence.

Controlling them will make a difference, of course. But I'm reminded that countries like Canada allow citizens to have guns, as well as countries in Europe, and their citizens don't go about killing innocent kids in schools. It's not "mental illness" either. I think it's the mindset of the people who have access to the weapons and that Americans are just generally angry people.

You're wrong there.

There have been some school shootings in Canada and Finland had the couple 2007 and 2008.
Considering US has population nearly ten times of Canada and around fifty times of Finland, we - and several central European countries - are actually pretty even per capita.

What should be noted is that these are indeed the countries that allow guns and have them in relatively great numbers (compared to any other country than US).

I thought the rest of the world were a little more self-controlled than the gun freaks in the US.

So maybe the answer is to stop private citizens having the damn things.

From what I've seen on my local news, some Americans do actually want something done about their country's gun laws. The least that can be done is to make it harder for people to get their hands on a gun. In my opinion, tightening the gun laws will save lives.

Of course it will. I'm not saying people shouldn't have guns, that won't happen, but at least make it difficult for casual people to get their hands on them. Perhaps if parents are charged with negligent homicide if their kids get hold of their parents' guns, it might make them a little more careful about storing them.

Our laws are pretty strict. You can't get a licence to own one before you've done and passed a competency test, and after a two-year waiting period. In the meantime the prospective owner's records are examined and they have to produce two testimonials from other solid citizens that they're competent adults. Then the guns have to be stored in a safe, separate from the ammunition. If the gun is stolen in a robbery, the owner is deemed complicit in the theft. It just not worth the effort unless you're storing the gun at a club.
