F1 2018

Looks like drivers for the season start have been decided. It is considered almost certain rumor that Williams will soon announce Sergey Sirotkin fills their last open place (with 3 year contract?). Sirotkin was third in GP2 series 2015 and 2016.
Other complete newcomer this year is Charles Leclerc (GP3 champion 2016, F2 champion 2017) on Sauber.
Besides them, the Toro Rosso drivers Pierre Gasly (GP2 champion 2016) and Brendon Hartley (WEC champion 2015 and 2017) will be driving their first full season, only having competed few last races 2017.

Season begins late March.

Judging by first test looks like teams are pretty much where they were last year, except possibly Renault improving some.

It's certainly most interesting season for years: Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have now all won three races each.

Couple notable stats about Austria.
This was first race ever that two Mercedes cars retire on technical problems.
For Haas, 4th place (with 5th on the side) was best result ever. It's also the best result for an American F1 constructor since 70's.

Driver changes for 2019 are moving on.

Gasly moves to Red Bull to replace Ricciardo moving to Renault, replacing Sainz moving to McLaren who replaces Alonso leaving the series (which will play havoc on my Game).

Stroll's dad bought the bankrupt Force India meaning he'll almost certainly go there and Perez appears confident to continue in the team, so Ocon has to find a new car.

During this season, the same 20 drivers (in same teams too) have driven all 12 races so far. I don't think there's ever been a full season with no driver changes, nor a season when there would've been only 20 drivers, so if this would continue for last 9 races it would make records.

The FIA said in a statement: “Following a disciplinary investigation and prosecution by the FIA under Article 4 of the FIA’s Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, the Sahara Force India F1 Team has accepted its exclusion from the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship with immediate effect, due to its incapacity to comply with Article 8.2 of the Sporting Regulations moving forward, and forfeits all Constructors Championship points under Article 6.2.”

I'm calling BS here. OK, rules are rules, but sometimes rules suck.

So, under a new ownership a team becomes another, new team. Fair enough.
The new team starts from zero, not allowed to keep old team's points. Still fair.
What I have problem with is that the old team is wiped out and everyone behind gets a free step up. They already have the advantage that the quit team isn't getting any more points rest of season; if you can't pass them with that, you belong behind them.

1983 Williams switched engines for last race before end of season and for that they counted as two entries that year: Williams-Ford was 4th and Williams-Honda was 11th in official team results.*

That's what I would want to see happen now (if FI can't possibly count as one team for the whole season). The old Sahara FI should have the position their 59 points earns them and the new entry gets where it does and we have officially 11 teams this season.
Leave the quitting team out of money count if you wish - that too is unfair, but understandable - but don't just wipe them out of scores as if the team didn't exist this season!

Edit *=looking it up, that actually happened to several team, though aside Williams only Lotus scored points and therefore was classified as two entries (Lotus-Renault 8th and Lotus-Ford tied 12th).

And the bomb falls! emoticon

Leclerc goes to Ferrari next year and Kimi... has two year contract to Sauber!?

I have two theories:

1. if Leclerc fails, they're ready to take Räikkönen back
2. there have been rumors - strictly denied by Sauber - that their current main sponsor Alfa Romeo might be taking bigger role, even buying Sauber to return to F1 as team; having Räikkönen would fit to that...

 emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

On one of likely last chances, Kimi takes that one more victory to hold alone Finnish record of F1 wins.

He now has 21 wins; Häkkinen 20, Keke Rosberg 5, Bottas 3 and Kovalainen having one means this is also 50th Formula 1 victory by Finnish drivers!

Anthoine Hubert wins GP3 (which for next season will be combined with European F3 championship as FIA F3 championship) and George Russell (driving Williams F1 next year) wins Formula 2.
