Do you hum when concentrating?

I tend to. Do you have any regular tunes that come up out of subconscious as you try to concentrate to do something?

I do a lot of Morricone.

Humming and whistling are forbidden in my house. Any unnecessary noise is forbidden in my house. You're allowed to sing, but not hum or whistle.

No, I don't hum or sing .. but John can't do anything without the help of his tongue sticking out of his mouth!

Personally I like silence. It's golden! When John is out I switch off the TV and radios etc and simply relax and enjoy my own company, and the peaceful environment we live in.

I would never ban anything in my house. But my gran used to say:

A whistling woman and a crowing hen
Are neither good for God nor man

Re: Do you hum when concentrating?

It's particularly when something(=mother) bothers me when I need to concentrate (on a game and/or what I'm doing in net), I almost instinctively start to hum.

For some reason, one of my common ones is God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen (despite that the song is hardly known in Finland, I've only caught it from Mr. Bean and some other things).

Nope. Anyone who hums or whistles in my house will get a tongue-lashing. I do not like unnecessary noise, especially if I already have unnecessary noise invading my tranquility.

Do you have any other rituals when trying to think hard, tapping fingers or like that?

I rub my fingers in a circular motion over the surfaces around me. Especially if they are soft and smooth, or shiny and smooth. Not rough surfaces, I don't like those.

Probably why I like using a trackpad. I can do it without people asking me why.

Though I haven't done it recently - as I'm much of time on computer and need both hands - I've often fidgeted some object, something that fits nicely in hand.
Not pen, back in school it'd be eraser in my left hand, right just holding pen as I work on something.

I'm most likely to tap fingers when humming.

I used to click pens, not with noise, I'd try to make them do that without the click sound, but when I did a lot of writing, I always had a pen in my hand. I'm almost incapable of using a standalone calculator without a pen in my hand. I don't think anyone uses calculators anymore that they're on phones and computers now. I don't even have a pen near me where I sit in the day.
