Presidential elections

It's a bad year on elections and I don't mean just the big US show.

Philippines showed why it's good to have runoff system.

Estonia is having trouble getting anyone elected. They don't have elections - I think their president doesn't wield much power - instead the parliament (100 members) chooses president or if they can't agree for anyone to get majority, about 250 officials (I'm not sure these are heads of city councils or what) are added to that and apparently they vote between two candidates with most support in parliament vote.
But now there were so many empty votes that the second system failed, throwing the ball back to parliament to vote again. To be seen how long it takes before they can agree. It does seem that the failed candidates are stepping down graciously.

And then there's Austria. They had election in april/may. Then the Constitutional Court annulled the result (which is pity because the Green candidate barely won the populist right one). Second round re-vote was supposed to be in october, but somebody messed something up and it had to be postponed to december.
So, so far electing president is taking about half a year longer than it was supposed to. In some other country that might create a minor constitutional crisis.

They finally got a president for Estonia - first female one - but it's already questioned if it happened in a legal way. In the decisive vote by parliament there was only one candidate.

Re: Presidential elections

Moldova is having their first ever presidential elections and it goes to second round between Igor Dodon (socialist) and Maia Sandu (liberal).

I just did some math. Let's say there's around 150 (probably not that many, but round it) countries in world where a president is elected or chosen by parliament. In average, say, every 5 years. That would mean average of 30 new president per year.
With all these approximates, I come to the conclusion that some country somewhere gets a new president every other week. Even with a much more pessimistic estimate about democracy around world, at least once a month.

It's a pity so few of those make news, I should find some site that has a calendar for all elections everywhere in the world.

So, there was just a presidential election and a Putin-friendly man won and a woman lost.

Was this in:
a. USA
b. Bulgaria
c. Moldova
d. all the above

Somewhat unfortunately, the answer is D emoticon

Was about to say that and then scrolled down to see I would actually have been correct!

So much nastiness in our politics here - don't know whether to laugh or cry. We still have the President who is stuck like glue. Unfortunately.

While I'm not entirely unhappy with our president, he does have kind of bad judgment on what things to get involved with and when to shut up.
Year and some to the next election; it's pretty certain he can have another 6 years if he wants.

Well I know I may not be in the majority in regards to political ideology here but for once in my lifetime a candidate that I actually voted for won in the elections and I am very happy about it. In the past I have voted mostly for 3rd party candidates like Ross Perot, Ralph Nader and even Gary Johnson, but now my presidential candidate won.

I'm glad you are experiencing joy in your candidate winning. At my class reunion this year I found myself table mates with Gary Johnson. ( He is dating a woman whom I graduated with ) A very pleasant fellow and we all agreed we enjoyed him. A couple fellows did try to engage him in political discussions and he (Gary) turned them down. His excuse was the night was about his date, not him. I really didn't follow anything regarding Gary and only seen a couple news cast where he goofed up, but doesn't everyone.

I must say I love living where I do, where neighbors and family voted against each other and just let it go and can still be friends. I find it embarrassing that people are out protesting something they can't change, but most of those protesters are paid protesters by George Soros, who just didn't get his way. And I blame Democrats who thought they were so cute registering to vote in the primaries to elect Trump thinking he'd be the one that Hillary could pic off. If they'd left well enough alone, Trump would most likely came in 3rd or 4th and Hillary would probably have won. Hillary only played to the elicits and forgot about the small people who couldn't give her millions of dollars. I live not far from which she claims is her home town. When she held rallies there, she could only pull a few hundred people and the last one the day before elections, only 69 people showed up. When you can't win an election in your home town what does that say. Many people voted for Obama the last two times, voted for Trump this time, simply because it was time for a change.

Re: Presidential elections

I'm not fond of arguing and have very hard tried to avoid being involved in discussions about the election, but I just can't resist stating my (negative) opinion of Trump.

I (at least think I) am moderate in most things, but to be honest I find it very difficult to understand people having view of world so different from mine that they support Trump (or for example True Finns party which became second biggest in Finland's last parliamentary elections). It's not just the non-PC comments - though I do think politicians are literally the people who are supposed to be PC - but (also) several other major factors:
1. He has no experience or expertise of any sort to qualify him for the job. But he has run huge companies, you say? That brings us to...
2. His best known ability is putting money in his own pockets. With the eternal blaming of politicians of just making themselves rich, I fail to see why a person like this should be expected to help things. It's a reasonable argument that he doesn't need more money, but he's not exactly known as philanthropist. And someone who becomes billionaire instead of settling to be millionaire and then becomes POTUS instead of settling to be billionaire smells to me as one who's never satisfied to have enough money or power.
3. As far as I see, he has no moral spine. And I'm saying that compared to Clinton and other traditional politicians. For one, Trump keeps constantly taking back everything he has said, he is a systematic turncoat and sellout. He also acts like having said first one thing and then the opposite is same as if he never said anything. Furthermore, he says anything to achieve what he wants, no matter what harm that causes to people by provoking violence etc.

I don't usually wish ill for any country in general (with possible exception of Sweden) and neither specifically for USA, but in this case I have to say I hope Trump's presidency will not be a success in any way. That is because it would help even worse people around the world to win future elections with similarly shameless and immoral manner. (Not that that hasn't been going on for years now, particularly in eastern Europe and Duterte at Philippines being the worst example yet.)
