Re: Random Finland Facts
Finnish flag was decided exactly 100 years ago. (Technically, law was signed two days later.)
Here are some could've-been flags

Re: Random Finland Facts
I'm not sure, but I think today is the only double flag day in Finland, occurring in average once in seven years: Mothers' Day and J.V. Snellman Day.
(Aside this, elections could theoretically happen any day, creating potential other double flag day.)
Of all people who have flag days in Finland, Snellman is perhaps the least well known. I'd bet over half of people (especially ones younger than myself, who've never seen his picture on money) can't name one thing he did.

Re: Random Finland Facts
I'm reading an interesting article about how Soviet Union and West competed about whose TV standard Finland would adopt when Finnish TV was created in 1950's.
SU had broadcasts aimed to West Germany and various other areas and CIA expected Finland to be targeted with heavy propaganda, as pretty much the ultimate fence-sitter in Europe. They pushed NBC to provide Finnish public broadcasting with shows and BBC (by requests of British ambassador to Finland) assisted with technology, to ensure Finland using western standards.
A year after broadcasting started, 80% of foreign movies shown in Finnish TV were American.

Re: Random Finland Facts
It's again the time of year when our strawberry farms need pickers - and it's rather surprising where those workers come from: 60% are estimated to be Ukrainian.
Previously considerable numbers of workers have been brought from Thailand to pick berries (I believe from the wild rather than farms).

Re: Random Finland Facts
Republic of Finland is 100 years old today.
Independence came about year and half earlier, but today is 100 years from the day constitution was approved, defining Finland as republic.
(For first year or so Finland was intended to be monarchy, plus there was related Civil War.)
That original constitution lasted till 2000, when it had to be rewritten to fit EU membership and adopting Euro as currency.

Fun statistic of the day: a Finnish judge is ten times less likely to commit a crime than an average citizen.

Re: Random Finland Facts
Liisankatu ("Liisa's street") is the oldest street name in Helsinki, 200 years old this year.
It refers to empress of Russia at the time it was named.
(Elizabeth>Lisa>Liisa)
It's one of street names in Finnish Monopoly.
