Random Finland Facts

Because I obviously need this topic.

July 25th is the day when "Jaakko throws a cold stone into water".
This is an old saying that has been twisted into a literal custom. Today is the calendar day of Jaakko - Finnish variant of Jakob - and tradition says this is when lake waters are warmest and begin to cool.

In Helsinki the Unscientific Society of Finland (a joke university student organization) arranges every year an event where someone by name of Jaakko - either a member or an available celebrity - throws/drops a cold (sometimes down to -200C...) stone in the sea (because it's more conveniently at central Helsinki than any lakes).

Norway is officially considering donating piece of land to Finland, including what would be highest mountain of Finland. (For our 100th birthday next year!)

Finland's tallest point on Halti is only the second highest peak of the mountain; highest point is just over the border. I'm under the impression there was some mistake in either measuring the tops or mapmaking, can't quite remember the story. But one way or another, apparently the border has been in different place than long ago intended, which has also changed the exact highest place in Finland.

Now the Norwegian town part of which the area is has made a suggestion - to be considered by parliament - to donate small area, including the highest peak of Halti, to Finland on our anniversary.
I suspect it's to promote tourism from Finland, but nice idea anyway.

Longtime smallest municipality of Finland Sottunga will have to join one of its neighbors by the end of decade.

I'll have to look up which will be smallest then...

Sottunga, located in Åland islands, has only about 100 residents.

You're not wrong, we are already in situation of population growth depending on immigration.
Because the Baby Boomers are starting to die, more people die than are born now.

In fact, just last week there was a great TV debate on how big problem our low birth rate is and what can be done about it.

According new tax records, biggest tax payer in Finland is Supercell, makers of mobile hit Clash of Clans. Also three most earning people are from that company.

"Video games, what are they good for?"
There's your answer.
