Football Chile has won Copa America Centenario, the 100th anniversary tournament of South American championship / Copa America.
Last year Chile won - in penalty shootout against Argentina like now too - their first CA championship ever in 44th tournament (they've been played very irregularly).
In Euro 2016, I just watched Iceland drop England. Smallest country ever to make it to the tournament, now in top 8... amazing!
Btw, isn't it kind of ominous how this guy has been waving goodbye?
Re: Football Thrilled that Iceland won! G and J were in Reykjavik for the celebrations last night, and said the atmosphere was electric and all the people were so happy!
Re: Football That Iceland game was an embarrassment. Worst England performance I've seen and that takes some doing, with games against Algeria and Germany in South Africa 2010 and Costa Rica in Brazil 2014 being other lowlights. Still, I'm pleased for Iceland; of all minnows to lose to I'm glad it was them. Shame they didn't push on afterwards against France, but like Wales and Hungary they surpassed themselves. I liked their viking chant too, though it was annoying to see other nations join the bandwagon; it seemed more special with the Icelanders doing it, but when France and others joined in it was annoying.
Though, besides the rise of the underdogs, this years Euros were rather dull and insipid, as defensive tactics dominated. Portugal have the be the most undeserving champions of the Euros ever with them not winning a game in 90 minutes until the semi finals! Heck, even Greece could say that they won most of their games in Euro 2004; Portugal had to scrape a draw against Hungary to make it through the group stage. To be fair though, international football rarely leaves me enthralled; in my living memory only the world cups in France 98 and Brazil 2014, as well as Euro 2000 have been really good. Germany 2006 was to a lesser extent.
France 2016 is probably the last time we'll see an international tournament hosted in a deserving and respectable country for the foreseeable future. The next Euros is going to travel across Europe and the next world cups are going to a corrupt mafia state that is ramping up tensions abroad and has a massive problem with hooliganism (as seen this year in France) and Qatar, whose treatment of its workers is a stain on it and on FIFA. It's sad that the timing of the tournament dominates over this.
Re: Football In domestic matters it has been a magnificent start for the Iron. Top of the league, 3 points clear with a superior goal difference, it truly looks like we could be on to something special and a return to the second flight of English football after a 6 season absence. Not bad for a northern industrial town, and the squad we've assembled this season looks the strongest we've had ever.
We've scored some crackers too so far this season:
Re: Football After leading the way for much of the year Scunny have faltered and have had to settle for the playoffs. Oh well, it's been good overall, and we still have a chance of promotion. It's the 2nd leg against Millwall tomorrow, so the nerves are jangling. Hopefully the Millwall fans will behave, they didn't in the first leg with their pitch invasions and coin throwing.
