President Mauno Koivisto (1982-94) has died at age of 93.

This is first death of a Finnish president for over 30 years, since his predecessor Urho Kekkonen died 1986.

President Niinistö announced today he will run for re-election 2018 - so he'll likely be around till 2024. It would take something pretty dramatic to bring him down.

Finnish politics, and specifically right-wing populism here, is at a turning point. And it's a turn for worse, I fear.

The Finns Party (previously translated as True Finns) has for its 20-year history been led by current minister of foreign affairs Timo Soini. He has been more moderate than most of the party and its voters and, I must admit, politically damn smart. Under him the party, build on the remnants of an old (successful at 70's) protest party, has risen out of nothing to at best second biggest.

But now he is stepping aside, at bad time for the party. Since the horribly successful 2015 elections Finns have lost half of their support. And change of leader should hit them further.

The two main candidates to replace were... I would compare them by policies to Trump and Le Pen. And yet the party - moderate voters of which don't approve either - is deeply divided between these two jerks.
The new party leader was just chosen and it is ]Jussi Halla-aho - the one I compare to Le Pen. He is the most notable anti-Islamist and "immigration critic" in this country - including having been convicted and fined for his blog writings.

The first question now is, how long will Finns be able to remain in cabinet with this new hard-line leader.
We might get a new government before next elections...

Well that didn't take long.
]Finnish govt implodes: Centre, NCP say deal off with Finns Party

I don't expect new elections, I'm sure they'll set up a majority somehow. Interesting thing is to see how many (if any) Finns MPs leave the party and join others.

...and now majority of Finns MPs have separated to form a new group - including the former leader Soini and the lost candidate Terho.
The new group is in fact so big that they could with their former partners reform the essentially same government, just leaving the actual Finns party out of it.

This is a fun train wreck to watch.

We might have a long and colorful list of candidates in next year presidential elections.
Not that it matters as Niinistö is 99% certain to be re-elected, but there'll be a good show.

Now here's an example about how a proper politician talks:

President Niinistö: "There is uncertainty especially in the transatlantic relations."

translation: we don't know WTF Trump does next

The presidential elections next year are turning into quite colorful show. With the right-populist Finns breaking up and possibly both groups setting a candidate and eternal candidate %C3%A4yrynen]Väyrynen planning to run again (he was Centre candidate 1988, 1994 and 2012 and barely lost candidacy 2000; now he's running independent), we might be having at least ten candidates.
Not that any of them has any chance against president Niinistö, but how others do will have an effect to various future elections.

Here's a fun headline...

The Russian customs caught today a ruthless smuggler. The stash was hidden inside a VW Caravelle that was coming from Finland back to Russia. The smuggler was carrying 99 kg of Finnish cheese!

Russia has set various import sanctions and only 5 kg of cheese is allowed. So the brave customs officials saved Russian citizens from 94 kg of illegal cheese.
