Re:
Sometimes you can't help it Barbara. When it's the only job you can get, and you have a big family to support, and you have your pension invested there, you just stay. My DH worked for the same company for 10 years, then spent a year at their office in London, before he returned to this country and spent another 35 years working for them. He's the sort of person who stays in a situation even if it isn't his dream, and because by the time he realised that he wasn't going anywhere, he'd already accumulated a huge amount of pension. So for his sacrifice we retired with him getting his full salary, increases in his pension every where, a bonus almost every year - the one year they didn't pay it in November/December, they paid it in January, and we get free executor and will services from the bank affiliated to his company. He would probably have been a very successful cricketer, or a football (soccer) player, but at the time he started working, in the 1950s, sport wasn't an option, and luckily he didn't because of the boycotts in the 70s and 80s, he would've battled for sponsorships. He could also have followed his other talent, acting, but again there was no security in that at the time he started working, so he stuck to a job that didn't make him happy, because he was responsible about security, rather than a dream.

Re: An update
Glad you're feeling better about it all Leo - perhaps you just need more time.

Re:
Leo only has a few months into this job and has nothing at this moment to loose. I'd keep applying and doing job interviews and moving on till I found the job I at least liked.
My husband once had 13 different jobs in one year and I had 5 until we found jobs we enjoyed going to.

Re: Re:
Thanks for the words again you lot; they have helped.
I had a second meeting with the HR woman and the head of the science department today, which has helped alleviate my anxiety further and I'm more at ease with myself now, which is good, because I will be working by myself on Monday and Tuesday since my colleague will not be in. Best not think about that too much right now though, not when I'm feeling more upbeat. Even the constantly high heart rate, breathlessness and lack of motivation to do anything at all has lessened since these meetings. I'm hoping that this continues to be the case, especially as Monday looms. The important thing is that I'm willing to continue in the role, and they can support me, as much as possible, now that I have been open about it.
Barbara: I will leave if things do not improve, but since my inner optimist, silent as it often is, has made a resurgence, I am willing to give it another go with a fresh outlook. Though, irrespective of this, I am applying for more suitable jobs, as this role is not something I want to do full time and I have since decided that the teaching route it could open up is not for me.

Re:
I'm pleased you've figured that one out Leo. Five members of my family went into teaching as their first choice, and all five left it. It takes a special kind of person to dedicate their lives to educating people who would rather be home playing computer games, or sitting around on a street corner with their friends, playing games on their phones, than being in school and paying attention.
Barbara you were lucky you had the option to be able to jump from one job to the next. With my peculiar socialising problems, I sometimes stayed in jobs I hated because I was too afraid to go through the interviewing process for another one. After I grew up and when I had to find a job or starve, I stayed in the jobs I got not because I loved them but because the only other option was to, literally lose my home and my kids, and not have anything to eat.
