Re: Re:

I had a job interview yesterday for a science technician post at a local school and I am pleased to say that I got it. It's only part time, but the contract is permanent and it's better than the dole!

The interview process was long, I had the tour and then met the school's other science technician before the interview. Then I had to wait for an hour before I heard the result, which was painful, but pleasant in the end. I felt sorry for the other guy, but I guess I shouldn't really, since it has to go to someone. I just hope that I am capable for the role (I'm sure I will, but since this is my first proper paid working role there will be some doubts in my mind; I need something to worry about).

Recently I have been thinking about doing a PGCE for the purpose of becoming a teacher, it is one possible avenue for me to go down. Despite my anxiety when speaking in front of an audience I do have a clear, loud voice, or so I am told, and my presentation skills have improved immensely since school. If I decide not to pursue a teaching career it will prove valuable work experience for working in a science based environment.

Well done Leo! Congrats on your achievement ... didn't doubt for a moment that you would find something to suit you. Not quite sure what a "science technician" does in a school or what it actually means - forgive the ignorance but it's a term with which I'm not familiar. Will you be teaching science? As with your driver's licence, confidence will come more and more once you actually start and get over the initial doubts/nerves/worries.

I'm so happy for you that you're thinking of exploring allied avenues as well, and not being closed-minded about other options in future. Teaching is always a worthy profession.

That's a nice job Leo. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Congrats.

Teaching is a good fall-bacl qualification to have. It's always valued anywhere in the world. I know a few people who are English and who've worked in other countries, teaching English, just because they're teachers.

Also, it opens doors for a potential professorship, should you continue to go through your chosen field to that level.

Re: Re:

Thanks guys, emoticon I'm pleased to have it. For the next few weeks I'll have to be supervised as all the safeguarding checks are finalised to make sure I'm suitable to work with vulnerable people (children), but there will be no problem there, so I'll soon be able to work independently when the bureaucracy is dealt with.

A science technician is someone who helps prepare the practicals for the pupils: it involves diluting solutions, growing bacteria etc, as well as making sure that the equipment is transported to and back from the classrooms. It's only part time, but it's better money than the dole and it provides suitable experience for my cv, as well as a possible avenue into a career that I'd want, unlike retail.

If I was to become a teacher it'd be most likely specified in science (probably chemistry, since geology is rarely taught at GCSE level unfortunately), but geography would be another possibility.

How's it going now Leo - have you settled in, and are you enjoying it? And how about the driving lessons? Hope you get a booking for your test and pass with flying colours, soon!

Re: Re:

I'm here, I'm here, and I do have some news in relation to the job hunt and driving.

My current job is okay, but I find it dull and laborious, it was always going to be a stop-gap. I have had this week off due to it being half term, mind, so it's not that bad! Though I have still been hunting for more appropriate, Earth science related, jobs during my time off and have recently applied for one role in Oxfordshire. In order to get through to the next step in the hiring process for this position, which I believe is a telephone interview, I had to undergo an online verbal and numerical test. Having done some research beforehand I realised that this test wasn't going to be simple, so I was a tad nervy. However, having completed the test this morning it has been confirmed that I passed and will make it to the next stage. I was somewhat surprised, because I only completed half of the questions set, but there is no chance that anyone can complete the test to 100%, given the strict time limit, unless they guess answers.

As for driving, well it's going fine, I'm still progressing, but I am not yet ready for a practical test. However, I have recently submitted an application for the theory test, which must be successfully completed before a practical test can be done.

Re: Re:

I've got to admit that I have not been entirely open with regards to my feelings for this job. I have been honest in that I find it dull, however I am also not enjoying it at all, due to my own anxiety related issues. Every week I feel anxious and tense before starting, and this has deteriorated throughout, when I thought these feelings would die as I went along. I dwell upon very error I make, no matter how small, also the other week I had to work on fiddly repairs, which has never been something I excelled at, and I was hopeless at this. I have practiced at home since, but it still just adds to the anxiety. I'm seriously thinking about packing it in, as a piddly little job it's just not worth this amount of stress, and I'm finding it difficult to motivate myself anymore; before, despite the nerves, I'd have a voice of positivity urging me on, but that has now ebbed away entirely. Also, I do not like my colleague, which doesn't help.

It's annoying, because I have coped with everything else in my life just fine; I have traveled long distances, gone to university, started driving lessons, had job interviews and none of these have daunted me to a great extent. Driving was hard on my nerves at first, but they bettered after each lesson, unlike this job. My Mum has struggled with anxiety, which has been much worse than what I've ever experienced, so she now feels bad because she feels like she's passed it on to me, since she's had to give up jobs before due to anxiety. I just hope it improves through time, because right now my thoughts are dominated by my issues in relation to this damn job.

Reminds me of the six month programming course I did fifteen years ago, the folks were nice, but the actual thing gave me, to paraphrase my favorite writer, a lesson my bones will remember: I hate computers.
At that time there were weeks on that every day when I walked home I was thinking that I'll ******* quit tomorrow.
In retrospect hard to say if I should've, but as it was that kind of short-ish thing I stayed till end.

Driving school was pretty much the worst stress I've had in my life, and I'm not looking forward having to relearn it soon, not having driven for years.
But at least driving is something one can easily motivate oneself to do.

Errors are something I don't deal well with either. Best I can do is get angry, the way you would in sports when opponent scores.
