Re: World Cup Brazil 2014

As they say in the internets: ZOMGWTFBBQ!!!1!

Brazilians still remember the loss to Uruguay 1950. This beating may be remembered longer...

Re: World Cup Brazil 2014

There we have it. First time in history an European team wins world cup at American continent.
Also first time ever European teams have two more championships than South Americans.
And first time European (or any one continent) teams have won three consecutive World Cups.

Lots more statistics to dig here, but the big of course was Klose's goals 15 & 16, making him all time WC scorer.

I'm glad it didn't go to penalties. Tournament like this deserved to end with a handsome goal.
And both sides had 2-3 opportunities, the kind where "best of the world" should score and one player did.

I know he was disappointed and extremely unhappy about his own performance, and the team losing, but I thought Lionel Messi showed no good sportsmanship at all when he took his silver medal off the moment it was draped around his neck. In fact, it was insulting. Second place in the world is awesome - grow up and learn some humility and some manners, Mr Wonderful.

Now, now, this was a big thing, perhaps a defining moment for a player's career. He's achieved everything one can in football except this and for that two hours he may be forever remembered as loser.
Not to mention the national meaning, Messi wasn't born last time Argentina won championship.

Losing like that, end of OT and you're just expecting it to go to penalties and then you won't even get shot at that...
I can't blame one.

I can understand his devastating disappointment but he should still remember what sport, and being a sportsman, is really all about.

Re: World Cup Brazil 2014

It was a good world cup, especially during the group stages. Games became more cagey during the knockout rounds mind, but there was still drama and it will be fondly remembered by myself. It's a shame that I'll also remember this tournament for off field matters, since the protesters did have reasonable concerns, which will be there for the next Olympics too.

I'm glad Germany won, they were the best team overall, with Neuer, Khedira and Muller being amongst the tournament's best players (along with Rodriguez of Colombia, Mascherano of Argentina, Robben of Netherlands and Navas of Costa Rica). Plus, unlike the Argentina squad ,they weren't involved in anything controversial. Before the tournament Argentinian players posed with a flag saying "los Malvinas son Argentinas." Fortunately FIFA are opening disciplinary actions against Argentina for this, as politics shouldn't be brought into sport, least not by the players themselves. If the former Scunthorpe player; Alex Calvo-Garcia got fined for revealing a t-shirt with a message of support for Basque independence, after scoring at Wembley in 1999, then the Argentinians should be punished too. Having said that, there were a few English oafs in Brazil too: I saw more than one guy, over social media, wearing England shirts with "Falklands 82" printed on them. The morons. Thankfully all news coverage showed English and Argentinian fans getting along together, and there were no incidences of significant crowd trouble committed by English fans during the tournament.

As for the England national team; well, the least that can be said the better. Another dire tournament, yet this one has been excused due to a potential for the youngsters. I have no confidence that they'll improve, not with a low number of coaches and coaching to an insufficient quality. The same mistakes will be continuously repeated without any investment into coaching and grass roots football, but none of this will happen whilst the FA fail to identify the areas that need improvement. Germany have hundreds more coaches than England, if not over a thousand more, the price to complete coaching courses are lower (this is true for many other nations too), so why don't the FA focus on that rather than their own nonsensical, unproven schemes that they try and force through now and then (e.g. the B team nonsense)? Greg Dyke, head of the FA, even suggested that England failed due to a lack of presence of any of the Royal Family. FFS! The punditry was dire, as expected, with cliched, unintelligent former footballers saying the obvious and giving little insight. Thierry Henry was the only standout in a group that consisted of Alan Hansen, Rio Ferdinand, Martin O'Neill and other such bores.
