Once again we lose horribly to Sweden, this time in women's floorball world championship final - in our home games, on top of all.
After 4-4 regular time, it eventually went to shootout and after 5 pairs of shooters left it 2-2 (with a very arguable goal of Finland disqualified!) the sixth shots decided it for Sweden.

Finland is again ringette world champion!

Ringette is a game that was invented back when ice hockey wasn't "appropriate" for women. It's mainly played in Canada and Finland.

Which means that when there's Ringette World Championship - every 2 to 4 years, now 11th time - it's Canada vs Finland.
Except that first time 1990 there were 8 teams: Finland, USA and 6 Canadian teams. Canadians were 6 first.
1992 there was only two Canadian teams, East and West, so Finland got bronze.
But since they lost to Finland 1994, Canada started to play as one team. That made them champions again 1996 and 2002, but since Finland has dominated, now winning 5th championship in row (7th in total).

Aside the actual championship played between Finland and Canada, there a wider secondary tournament that now consisted of Czech, Slovakia, Sweden, USA and junior teams of Finland, Canada and Sweden. Canada U21 won Finland U20 for this "President's Trophy".

IFK Mariehamn has won their first Finnish championship emoticon

You'll see why this is incredible if you look up Mariehamn (aka Maarianhamina) on map: it's capital of Åland Islands, the autonomous are that has population of less than 30 000, around 0.5% of whole Finland.

IFK (Swedish for "Spors Club") Mariehamn is the only team located in Åland in any sports playing on Finnish championship level (they have since 2005).

So this is absolutely huge thing there emoticon

FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 final medal table:
(gold-silver-bronze-medals)
1 Norway 7 6 5 18
2 Germany 6 3 2 11
3 Russia 2 4 0 6
4 Austria 2 1 2 5
5 Finland 1 1 3 5
6 Italy 1 1 0 2
7 Poland 1 0 1 2
8 Canada 1 0 0 1
9 Japan 0 2 3 5
10 Sweden 0 2 2 4
11 United States 0 1 2 3
12 France 0 0 1 1

Quite satisfying result for Finland, we've done so bad in recent years. 5 medal was a sort of goal for us, we got one gold and most importantly we did better than Sweden.

Bit of Finnish basketball history: Lauri Markkanen was 7th in NBA draft, going to Chicago Bulls.

There's been a very short list of Finnish NBA players (and shorter of native/ethnics Finns...) and certainly not nearly as high in draft.

Not unexpected, but nevertheless disappointing: best result by Finnish athletes in London was 5th by Pitkämäki in javelin - which was really our only hope for medal anyway.

Outside motorsports (and some ball games) we're doing worse in sports than ever.
In case of football, literally: Finland is now 110th in FIFA ranking, lowest ever.

Lauri Markkanen makes Finnish NBA history by not only becoming third Finn to play in the series (and second native Finn) but by scoring in his first game more points any Finn ever.
