We practically know all other drivers except ones for Caterham - and it's still uncertain if the team can compete. Though if Caterham is out, there's only 9 teams/18 cars which is against the Concorde Agreement and could result to third cars... With (at least) one team out and (so far) three rookies in, at least 5 this season drivers are out of F1: Button, Gutierrez, Sutil, Vergne, Chilton, Kobayashi and Bianchi (still in very bad shape, but has better prognosis than Schumi) are without job, plus Lotterer and Stevens who drove one GP on Cateham.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 29 Nov 2014 15:34:08 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104059,from=rss#post104059https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104059,from=rss#post104059Virgin/Marussia/Manor is done. Game Over. The team is finished, won't be competing again. With two rookies coming in (Verstappen & Nasr), that mean four current drivers will be out of F1 next year, six if Caterham goes down and Forza Rossa won't enter. Unless there'll be third cars... Anything but that )nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Fri, 07 Nov 2014 16:46:22 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104054,from=rss#post104054https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104054,from=rss#post104054Here's answers to some of those speculations: - Button quits! - McLaren takes Alonso and keeps Magnussen (not official, but very certain info) - Caterham and Marussia (as Manor) have entered for season 2015; not that it means really anything - Forza Rossa hasn't entered and has been real quiet. I would expect they'll buy a team, start 2016 or can't find the money at all - Sauber has announced next year drivers: Ericsson and Felipe Nasr (Brazilian from GP2) Now, aside the possibly continuing Caterham and Marussia the only remaining open driver seats are one on Lotus (Grosjean is unconfirmed, but should continue) and Toro Rosso (likely Vergne continues or they bring in Carlos Sainz Jr.) Edit: Not so fast. Button doesn't confirm this information, reported as fact by pretty trustworthy sources. But that might be just button negotiating a better deal for where ever he'll drive next year.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Thu, 06 Nov 2014 11:10:47 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104025,from=rss#post104025https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104025,from=rss#post104025I'm expecting that there'll be next season two world champions on McLaren - and on Ferrari and Mercedes too, if Rosberg wins. Don't know about Magnussen. Sure hasn't looked good so far, but remember how Grosjean was and he's turned alright. But I suspect Magnussen may not again get shot with even this good team/car. Then again, he's got years... At the moment the big question is how many team will there be 2015. Can Caterham and Marussia find buyer? Will Forza Rossa enter as completely new team or will they buy one of those? How bad is Sauber really doing, or Force India? And if there are less than ten teams, can Bernie really push through third cars? Or worse yet, only to some teams, as he's right now suggesting?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 01 Nov 2014 16:58:38 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104023,from=rss#post104023https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p104023,from=rss#post104023quote:Kaunisto wrote: Neither McLaren driver has contract for next year and I'm not sure they'll keep either. I think Button has the capability for a few more years; he's consistently outperformed team mates in a struggling car in recent years, and he has picked up some fairly solid results in previous races. British pundits rave about Magnussen, citing him as the next best thing, commonly bracketing him with Ricciardo and Bottas (and occasionally Kvyat) in a group of potential world champions for the future. I don't see it myself, he's error prone and I am not surprised that he's collected several penalties throughout the year; I suspect this is the most for any driver in 2014. I've yet to see the promise that the likes of David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan see.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Li0nh3eart)Sat, 01 Nov 2014 14:33:26 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103988,from=rss#post103988https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103988,from=rss#post103988Both Marussia and Caterham are in much trouble and though there are always wild rumors, now it has started to look realistic that one or both won't compete next season, or at worst case even the remaining three races. Fall of both would leave only 9 teams/18 cars and if current Concorde Agreement has the limit of 20 competitors (like earlier ones did), this could have serious legal consequences for F1. However, what actually worries me is that this would give Bernie a chance of lifetime to push for the idea of 3 car teams. Edit: and here we have it, Caterham will miss at least USA and Brazil (Bernie has asked them to drive in Abu Dhabi) and apparently Marussia isn't in US GP either.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 25 Oct 2014 00:13:29 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103890,from=rss#post103890https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103890,from=rss#post103890Driver roulette just got to full speed - Brazilian/Spanish/Italian media was surprisingly right. I'm not overly keen on this, I quite like the smaller teams, but they will always struggle whilst the wealth is so unevenly distributed. It seems a drastic step to deal with struggling teams, and gives little hope to future teams that may want to join the sport. Also, I'm presuming that Red Bull and Toro Rosso will survive the cut, so that would mean 6 drivers out of 24 would be racing for Red Bull or its "feeder" team. Well, at least Bernie is thinking of scrapping double points for last race next year. I'd be pleased to see that hasty, knee-jerk response to Red Bull's/Vettel's dominance scrapped.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Li0nh3eart)Mon, 22 Sep 2014 19:22:49 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103717,from=rss#post103717https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103717,from=rss#post103717I'm pretty satisfied with our commentators, except for few too many attempts of humor now and thennondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Tue, 09 Sep 2014 21:56:30 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103715,from=rss#post103715https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103715,from=rss#post103715After the Monza race I must have a mini-rant about Eddie Jordan and the standard of punditry in sport. Right after the podium ceremony Eddie Jordan, whilst interviewing Toto Wolff, launched into tin foil hat mode and stated that he was a skeptic and that he believed that Nico Rosberg deliberately let Hamilton past to win, which Toto laughed off of course. Later on he dribbled on about how the race went more positively for Nico than Lewis, and how Nico will see Monza as the race where he won the title, whilst Hamilton will rue Rosberg not getting a DNF. When he first joined the BBC I thought he was a breath of fresh air, but now, seemingly, he resorts to conspiracy theories and hyperbole to try and hook viewers, but I find it tiresome. It ruins every race; every racing incident of note becomes a nefarious conspiracy theory to gift their favoured driver the victory, or to exact revenge for some previous misdemeanour and it's because of the comments by idiots like Jordan as to why they get spread. What I want from punditry is concise, intelligent insight from former sportsmen that explain the intricacies of the sport to the viewer. This is often the case with Martin Brundle in F1 and Gary Neville in football. However, far too often the pundits seem to state the obvious, whilst maintaining an attitude of pompousness and arrogance, they are cliche ridden and are commonly, in football's case, barely literate (e.g. Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Savage etc). There are many radio hosts, who aren't former sportsmen, that are articulate and insightful, but get shunned by tv executives, because they believe that the public want the former athletes, because by playing the sport to a professional level it means that they're above the likes us. This just feeds their egos (which, in Garth Crooks' case, is already well fed). Okay, with F1 I do accept that former drivers and team members will have a greater knowledge of the complex nature of motorsport, but there must be pundits out there more suitable than Eddie Jordan and his "skepticism" and rating grabbing nonsense. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Li0nh3eart)Tue, 09 Sep 2014 20:50:16 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103707,from=rss#post103707https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103707,from=rss#post103707The good news of the day is that Bottas - and Massa too - continues at Williams next year. Somebody said Azerbaijan is "a new frontier" for F1 and that may be true, but I'm not sure if it's they should be aiming for. I get reaching for China and US, or places with investors like (the wealthy bits of) Middle East and Russia, but I can't see a future for F1 in former Soviet countries. Even Russia will have hard time unless they in few years get a more successful driver or team. Unrelated, I'm amazed Lotus is keeping Maldonado next year. His backing by Venezuela's national oil company has become shaky and while any driver with a GP win in his record has some credibility, I don't think he's doing the kind of work one should to be in F1.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sun, 27 Jul 2014 22:15:44 +0000 Re: F1 2014https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103412,from=rss#post103412https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p103412,from=rss#post103412Toto Wolff and Mercedes don't seem happy by their reliability issues, that's for sure. Well, it'll be another corrupt country to host a major sporting event and do we need another street circuit? On our annual series "how to F up Formula 1 rules": Safety Car rule is about be dramatically changed next season. Instead of the running start, a SC situation will result to a grid start. And, if I got this right, drivers lap or several behind can catch up to others (that's actually not as stupid or unfair as you might first think).
