Iggy Pop and Tom Waits (Coffee and Cigarettes)

This just cracks me up. They are both just classic here.

I've never seen such chemistry between two supposedly non-actors. Obviously the two have multi talent with music + acting. It's just unbelievable in my opinion. Really top quality acting there.

That is classic, Sokol. Neither of them are on the jukebox and both make excuses to smoke. I saw the Stooges in Detroit when I was a kid but it was a little too violent for me. It was my first time in a mosh pit and seeing people stage diving. My first introduction to the underground and I have to admit it was a little scary. Tom Waits is very talented on the piano but I don't get what he does with his voice. I know he has or had a good voice but he doesn't use it. He is on Letterman a lot and I watch when he does a show for PBS but I still don't get his style. It's like a bad imitation of Louis Armstrong.

I wonder what year that video was made cuz Waits looks good for his age.

Thanks Sokol. I wish someone would explain Tom Waits' style to me. I know he is a great pianist but I don't get what he does with his voice. He has a good voice when he wants to. What's with all the raspy coffee and cigarette growling? Why not use the voice we know he has?

I don't know. Maybe because it sounds better and less generic than his less raspy voice. Maybe cause his raspy voice makes more money. People seem to like the raspy smokers voice. Perhaps it's more about the quality of the lyrics and less about the quality of the voice. I doubt anyone would say that Bob Dylan, or Lemmy Kilmister have ideal singing voices. I guess you could ask the same question as to why death metal bands sing like they are some demented demon from hell whose lyrics you can only comprehend by reading the albums lyrics, or why bands like Iron Maiden or Overkill or even Van Halen always have to hit those high pitch vocals. I think singers just do what they can do to have an interesting sound that people will listen to. Don't quite know why I like his music, but I do.

Understanding Protopunk. A lot of music writers credit The Rolling Stones, Kinks, and The Who for being the godfathers of punk but these bands were managed with a little too much structure to be punk. Protopunk was raw, free-form, and improvised. There was no line between the stage and the audience; the crowd was part of the show. The idea was to find a band no one heard of, and everyone had a British invasion album. When I was kid the bands would sell their album in the parking lot before the show. They were not rock stars. We would smoke a blunt and have a beer with the band before and after the show.

The music scene in Chicago had a lot of rage but it was not as primitive as what The Stooges were doing in Detroit. Iggy experimented with many different sounds to tap into that youthful rage. This Youtube was not available to embed so you'll have to click on the link.

I hate when music writers write stuff and get the genre's all messed up. This has been happening for a while now. Probably still going on. I don't know, I don't keep track of it much now. The Stones, Kink's and Who, are all great at what they do. Straight up "Rock N' Roll". They had nothing to do with punk or proto-punk. Maybe the Kink's had some proto-punkish sound on some of their tracks but I wouldn't go further than that.

I remember back in the late 80's and early 90's music writers would call bands like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard "Heavy Metal". It would even be listed like that in music stores. What a joke. At least now people give them the term "80's hair bands" to music like that, as that was basically what they were.

That documentary on the stooges was pretty good. I've seen allot of the clips from other recordings and youtube uploads before but some stuff I hadn't seen. Did you know the stooges released another new album this year? Ready to Die.

It's got James Williamson back on guitar, now that Ron Asheton is no longer with us. Personally I always thought James' guitar stuff (especially the leads) were way better than Ron's, although Ron had some cool riffs and pedal effects going on. I listened to the whole new album. It's not quite Raw Power (and I don't think they could ever reach that potential again), but it's got some really good tunes.

They mellowed with age but I can still hear the hard driving Stooges sound. Iggy's voice is holding strong despite all the coffee and cigarettes.

I knew a couple of kids that would cut themselves. One to see the blood and the other for a decorative scar. He would carve girls name in his arm. Unfortunately his relationships only lasted a few months so he had quite a few names carved in his arm. These were the type of people that gravitated to punk rock - mostly guys that liked to hurt themselves. It made it difficult to get close to the stage because there were all these crazy guys jumping around and slamming into each other. Punk created the mosh pit. A lot of bands had female singers but very few gals at a punk club. We would drop the gals at the club of their choice and us guys would head to the rage. Getting close to the stage was not for the faint of heart.

by The Stooges
When you find that you need a break
Doesn't matter if you're real or fake
Doesn't matter what the crowd thinks
You need sex or your life is gonna stink

I'm on my knees for those DD's
Why tell a lie, I am stupefied

I'm so happy when I look at them
Though I'm happier when I'm touching them
Symbolic of a good atmosphere
Complications lead to dust, disappear
