Re: Poems

I'm not sure if this is compliment or insult, but that makes me think open mic night.
I'd imagine it would work better spoken than as text. Then again most poetry does.

I don't get poetry unless it's put to music. I can relate to heard lyrics more than I can to them written down.

Re: Poems

I make the mistake of writing what I like and that's why I'll always be an amateur. This is possibly the best I can do cuz the creative side of my brain suffered from atrophy a long time ago. I want to write more pop but I no longer have the courage to open myself up, especially as a newbie.

Re: Poems

I always have to explain my crude poems. People that know me expect them to be refined. They don't see street language as art but anyone that writes a lot goes through phases.

absurd
shunned by the wicked
and cussed out by a nun
nothing makes sense to me
the world is coming undone
in our age of enlightenment
we became american greed
for the land of milk and honey
every mother's child must bleed
yet the biggest crisis i face in a day
is not picking up a wireless connection
while in the ghetto feeding the homeless
some little kid died of a bladder infection
congress rushed to borrow bailout money
to retain top execs at aig and goldman sachs
fat cats with their hand out for a hanukkah bonus
while workers lose a pension or are getting the ax
so don't tell me i'm crazy and that i need to conform
we just started a revolution against the robber barons
take this journey to the underworld and see who returns
follow xanthias lead and send your masters to their charons

Re: Poems

confessional
forgive me father for i have sinned
my last confession was when i found out
my parents lied to me about the easter bunny
right out of the blue and evidently insignificant
myriads of child victims for the sake of tradition
how do i know what is real or who i can trust
another sacrificial lamb of the vernal equinox
mom told me to stay quiet and not to tell my sis
but i did and she cried and got me in big trouble
so you gave me my sacrament of penance for kids
which did nothing to assimilate me with an abstract god
i want no part of the deception on human resurrection
the festival of martyrdom has caused enough pain
end the lies and clean up your own backyard
spring is in the air and the cycle renewed
a time to celebrate fertility and the joy of life
offering colored eggs in hope for a good harvest
that a full year of food supply will soon be restored
the goddess oestre did not cause your oedipus complex
stop being a killjoy with suffering, torture, and death
no offense father but this will be my last confession

Something in your text makes makes me think Warren Ellis' comics.
It's been too long since I last read Transmetropolitan.

Re: Poems

My poems do have very dry humor hidden in them but not too many pick up on that.

When I found out that Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny were a way for parents to have fun with kids, I assumed that since both were associated with a religious holiday that eventually my parents would tell me they were only kidding about Jesus too. Years went by but my parents kept insisting their abstract god was real. Things got so bad that I was not allowed to talk about mythology or philosophy in the house. Believers are good little boys and girls and nonbelievers are bad and need to be punished. Any kid that wanted to be considered a good kid had to play along with the family tradition of an imaginary god. I learned at a very early age that questioning groupthink authority was enough to get me ousted from the group.

As an adult I found the same to be true in the workforce. If you disagreed with groupthink you were no longer asked to attend meetings. Anyone that said the emperor was not wearing clothes was taken off the project. This is why so many U.S. companies are going bankrupt. The owners surround themselves with yes-people that do what they are told instead of doing their job.

Re: Poems

Neat poems. I remember when I was a little kid I lost a tooth and I put the tooth under my pillow for the tooth fairy. When I woke up the tooth was still there so I asked my mom about it, and she said why don't you go take your shower and get ready for school and maybe the tooth fairly will come then but I wasn't buying it. Then I thought if the tooth fairy wasn't real, then what about Santa and the Easter Bunny? It was a disappointing and depressing day.

Re: Poems

Thanks Sokol. I know naturalist, deist, and agnostic that don't see any harm in passing down the family fairytails to their kids. They insist that kids know the difference between a fairytail and when they are being lied to. My argument is that a high percentage of kids that are told fairytails end up being religious as adults. Culture is nothing more than the scars of our childhood. That's why we are taught the pledge of allegiance our first day of school. It becomes branded in our brain, anyone that does not pledge allegiance is the enemy.
