Console sales

It has for long been my hobby to follow video game sales statistics, mainly at [sign in to see URL]

This topic is for my general observations on the subject.

The christmas sales were exceptionally even. PS3 and X360 sold practically as much over december and if we add Wii and WiiU together, Nintendo did almost the same.

Re: Console sales

WiiU is losing momentum fast. Its biggest problem seem to be Nintendo's other consoles: in Europe and USA the old Wii still sells well and in Japan 3DS outsells all other consoles combined.

The regular Wii allows you to also play Game Cube games and attach up to 4 game cube controllers. The Wii U however does not. Sure you could set it to access the net and download stuff but people like to be able to just use the game disks or cartidges of previous systems in the new ones. Like how you can play both Nintendo DS games and Game Boy Advance games on the Nintendo DS, or like you can play both Atari 2600 games and Atari 7800 games on the Atari 7800.

Backwards compatibility is important. The problem is that systems need to sell new games to be profitable. I think they dropped PS2 from PS3 more because of this than to lower price.

Numbers are low, even considering time of year and generation ending soon. But otherwise there's nothing unusual: PS3 sells in Europe, X360 in US and 3DS in Japan.

Vita is finally making it in Japan, due price drop and couple big games. But it has lot to improve in rest of world.

By all counts Wii U is in trouble, but not as bad as many doomsayers suggest. It has infact sold more than PS3 and X360 in same time from launch. And there's a theory Nintendo is holding back, planning to make a big push just before PS4 comes.

We bought a Wii in the UK in 2009. I only used it a couple of times after I hurt my shoulder, then I gave it to my son's girlfriend. I don't know if she still plays with it. I think those things are novelties that wear thin after a few games.

The Wii is OK but honestly I prefer to press buttons with my fingers rather than move my hand and arms around when playing console video games. For games played on the computer I usually prefer hitting keys on the keyboard rather than clicking the mouse.

I prefer the mouse and natural movement rather than beating a joystick or a keyboard. Odd how even in that behaviour we have different preferences.

I do prefer mouse in most genres, though that's often with keyboard. In driving it's keyboard (as I've never had a wheel).
I don't play much with pads, despite learning that first on Sega. Only action-adventures/platformers that are really made for pad need one and sometimes keyboard is better.

But motion controls, when done really well (which is rare...) are not to be underestimated. It'll be a sad day when I no longer have a TV that works with Sega Light Phaser.
