Yes these were one of the olympics to be remembered. Some games, like 1996 and 2000, I've badly forgotten, while others - 1988, 1992 - stand out.
As for better (yours) and worse (ours) success, we should remember over half of countries didn't get any medals.

Oh I think sports is a quite global religion. Of course there are places with other things to worry, but even Afghanistan got a bronze.
Here 40% of people were watching the javelin final, that's same the annual top events: independence day celebrations and ice hockey WC final (if we're in it).
