Of course there are places with other things to worry, but even Afghanistan got a bronze. Here 40% of people were watching the javelin final, that's same the annual top events: independence day celebrations and ice hockey WC final (if we're in it).nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:21:12 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95254,from=rss#post95254https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95254,from=rss#post95254True. But then sport isn't a religion there like it is here.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Tue, 14 Aug 2012 08:37:38 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95251,from=rss#post95251https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95251,from=rss#post95251Yes these were one of the olympics to be remembered. Some games, like 1996 and 2000, I've badly forgotten, while others - 1988, 1992 - stand out. As for better (yours) and worse (ours) success, we should remember over half of countries didn't get any medals.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Mon, 13 Aug 2012 14:18:57 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95250,from=rss#post95250https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95250,from=rss#post95250I thought it was all splendidly fabulous -well done to all the medal winners,to every single competitor, and to London for staging a wonderful Olympics!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Mon, 13 Aug 2012 08:51:07 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95249,from=rss#post95249https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95249,from=rss#post95249Interesting that. Remember though those were privileged white men who went to the games at that time, no women and no people of colour.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sun, 12 Aug 2012 20:34:07 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95246,from=rss#post95246https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95246,from=rss#post95246Well it's better than Finland has done since 1984. Btw I checked that best games for SA have been 1912 (4-2-0) and 1920 (3-4-3). nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sun, 12 Aug 2012 20:00:11 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95245,from=rss#post95245https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95245,from=rss#post95245I hear they're saying that our 6 medals are the best we've ever had. Seems odd to me to think that's "best" when this country is completely insane about sport. I suppose because rugby and soccer are not Olympics games, rugby anyway. If cricket and rugby were in the Olympics it would be different. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sun, 12 Aug 2012 15:40:36 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95244,from=rss#post95244https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95244,from=rss#post95244We didn't expect much more, but we missed frustratingly several chances. It's ominous that both sailing events we got medals from will not be in next games.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sun, 12 Aug 2012 12:34:48 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95243,from=rss#post95243https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95243,from=rss#post95243We got a lot fewer medals than I thought we would. I really thought that the way they built up the athletes would get us more success than it did. Pretty disappointing for me.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sun, 12 Aug 2012 07:41:11 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95239,from=rss#post95239https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95239,from=rss#post95239After bitter loss in semifinal, we have bronze in women's match race sailing! It's funny both our medals are from sailing (windsurfing is technically in the category). Sailing is stereotypically hobby of the Swedish speaking minority(=upper class twits) and that's all we have for national pride... So thumbs up for javelin men tonight. If they don't get gold or silver, this'll be our worst ever medal count. Edit: and it's bronze. On negative: 0-1-2 is our worst olympics ever. Not much worse than 2004 0-2-0, but is. On positive: at least we got athletics medal, unlike 2004. In fact this is 8th time our only athletics medal(/s) comes from javelin (7th from men's only). But it's horrible compared to our pre-WWII glory. In five olympics 1912-1932 Finland was 2nd in athletics medal tables after USA, 1936 3rd after Germany. But we never recovered from the war.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 11 Aug 2012 15:46:49 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95229,from=rss#post95229https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95229,from=rss#post95229Bridgitte Hartley from SA just got bronze in the 500m kayak race - well done girl!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Thu, 09 Aug 2012 11:54:10 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95221,from=rss#post95221https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95221,from=rss#post95221Sailing match race looks good, our team made it to semifinals. But that's our last hope in sailing, others were 7th, 7th and 10th. I just hope our javelin men get a medal.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Wed, 08 Aug 2012 22:50:58 +0000 Re: Olympicshttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95219,from=rss#post95219https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95219,from=rss#post95219At the moment we're 17th on the medals table - pretty good I think. Hoping Caster Semenya also does well - she came second in the heat for the 800m today, so holding thumbs for her.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Wed, 08 Aug 2012 18:04:05 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95215,from=rss#post95215https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95215,from=rss#post95215Actually I must agree. Oscar is an inspiration, that's for sure. Have absolutely loved the Olympics this year, and also enjoy cheering on Team GB because that's also close to my heart with my roots being there, and the only other place on the planet of all the countries that I've visited, where I slot in and feel totally at home.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Wed, 08 Aug 2012 14:08:09 +0000 Re: Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95206,from=rss#post95206https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p95206,from=rss#post95206Despite Oscar coming last in the semi he has proved himself capable of competing amongst the others and can hold his head high. The actions of the other athletes at the end of the race just showed how respected he is amongst his fellow runners. I'm so chuffed with our guys. The British media portrayed it as a hard fought silver for the Brits. There were no hard feelings, in fact the South Africans were complimented. Then again the media (and the attention seeking PM of ours) have been rather excited about our gold medal exploits. I watched the team pursuit in the velodrome yesterday and it was great to see us claim gold by destroying the Aussies. I've seen Oscar Pistorius in the 800m.
