I've had a busy week. Been planning replacement of my stove which is a mess, and dealing with a few things that needed attention. Last night I had a really bad fall outside. I went to stop the dog's hysterical desire to chase cats, and tripped up a little step to the next level of bricks.

It's actually a stupid way to lay paving, having half-brick steps on a path. Still I know they're there, but I forget, so bam, onto the bricks. I tore my knee, the one I keep smashing and then have to wait to be able to use it to get up again, ripped the right side of my face to shreds, and sprained my right wrist. I was in shock afterwards so I slept through the night on the painkillers I took, and today had to let my family see me with all my wounds. My granddaughter was a little rattled to see me like that. so she quietly sat on my chair watching television while the grownups ate lunch.

Not a good start to the next year of living in Johannesburg - that's four falls in less than a month. My oldest daughter in law suggests I might have balance problems and that I should get my ears checked. I'm going to do that.

Hopefully this week I'll get my new stove installed, and the kitchen will look a little neater.

I'm in bed now again before sunset, with a lovely late summer storm outside.

When were the other three falls Mo? Feel better soon!

Spent the whole day in PMB yesterday, very busy sorting out a host of things including another visit to the dentist for final impressions before the big extraction day looming too close on the horizon for my liking.

This morning we went to the monthly Big Breakfast here at the centre, which as always was really very good. Then to the care centre to have flu jabs, and I had a B12 injection as well.

Have been feeling down because I discovered that my kidney function is severely compromised and I need to go back to the nephrologist for more tests. Not happy am I - plus a lot of other very stressful things going on in our lives at the moment. Try not to think about it because I know there are so many others with so many more serious things wrong with them ... trying to look on the bright side.

Oh well, at least we have two wonderful new puppies to love and cuddle, and the weather is brilliant, and there is so much to be thankful for and happy about,

I forget all the falls, so many of them.

I was wearing slip slop slippers, and tripped over the lock at the bottom of the kitchen gate. Bam on the floor. The second one was going out at night, I slipped on the stairs, sat down, and bashed my elbow against the pot plant. That's healed now. A couple of others were minor but also outside. So I'm a little wary of walking around outside the house now without something to hold onto. I even take a stick with me to the shops now.

To update on the big fall last weekend. All the wounds have healed, except the black eye, that's still not looking good. The scrapes on my face have left scars, but easily covered with makeup. My knee won't ever be the same, so I have to watch that I don't fall again if only to not have to lean on it.

My hand, that's another issue. It seems that one of the tiny metacarpals in the palm is broken. It's too late now to fix it without surgery. It's still very painful. I can't hold anything heavy in that hand, so I have it padded and strapped up. We're getting a proper orthopaedic guard for it today. Another four weeks for it to heal properly. And my head is still sensitive to the touch. Of course I should've gone to the hospital immediately after the fall, but I don't like to make a fuss, so mostly I deal with my health issues myself, only going to doctors when it's beyond my knowledge to fix, like when I need antibiotics or if the problem is out of my reach, like the time I got sunstroke from being in the pool too long.

Giving up Mo - I did suggest you went to the doctor but you're too stubborn.

Not happy today - my dear friend Wendy in Durban died just after midnight, having struggled with cancer for about ten years. She was always upbeat and cheerful and never complained about the dreadful pain she had to endure, and all the years of treatment and surgeries. Always positive, always hopeful, loved life, and cared more about others' problems than her own. A truly unique person, and she will be missed very much.

Family issues also not making me happy at the moment; very complicated.

Too much stress. Need to see the nephrologist soon ...

Sorry about your friend Petal.

It's not that I'm stubborn about going to doctors, I just don't like to inconvenience people when I can see what the problem is and fix it myself. My d-i-l is also a trained first aider so she knows what to look for, and how to treat minor injuries. It's not just a matter of taking pulses and feeling for a fever anymore, she knows how to check for concussion, and how to treat it. She took care of my wounds, so I have only minor scarring now that will fade over time with the creams we're using. The biggest issue was that we couldn't identify the damage to my hand. It appeared strained, so we treated it as that. She strapped it up, and it we kept it that way for a few days until the swelling went down. Now we can see that one of the metacarpals is either dislocated or broken because there's a sensitive lump on the side of my hand. Yesterday she bought a hand guard to immobilise it for the next couple of weeks.

I'm already on anti-inflammatories I don't need antibiotics, if I thought I did, I'd go a doctor.

It's really all about not wanting to make people sit around an emergency room for damage we are able to treat ourselves. When the problem Is beyond my knowledge, I go to doctors. Like the time my kidneys seized up when.I came here for a visit. Otherwise, I'm dine.

Today I bought pile of couple dozen Playstation 1 demo CDs (there happened to be couple full games too).

So I'll be busy for rest of the week...

Back from a wonderful weekend at the coast, catching up with family and meeting up for a reunion. Must really get back to the family tree .. just wish there weren't so many interruptions, so that I could sit and sort things peacefully. Spent time with my brother and sil, saw my special niece who came for dinner, and drove down to Amanzimtoti to see a cousin's daughter who flew in from Perth for her sister's up and coming wedding next weekend. Lots of jollification! The puppies came with us, and were so good - behaved beautifully and did us proud, as they say ...

Otherwise, need to sort out some computer things today and do some grocery shopping; tomorrow and Thursday we need to go to PMBm, and then the weekend will be here again.

Looking forward to seeing our son and grand-daughter again very soon; that's a big plus!

I'm waiting for the stove to be installed. Can't wait to see the ugly old relic leave the house. Finally after almost seven years I'll have a new and clean properly working stove again.

Otherwise my facial wounds have healed. The lump on my head is slowly going down, and doesn't hurt as much anymore. My hand though. That's going to take a little longer. Almost three weeks now, and it's still sore. I've learnt to be careful outside now. Don't want to fall again.

My family tree is complete. 23 generations back to 960CE. Not complete, there are only four people in that generation, but in total I have over a thousand people in the tree. One thing has emerged, I am thoroughly South African. After the 17th century, no foreign genes have been deposited into my personal gene pool. My kids have new blood, but I don't. I'm going to have to learn to speak Afrikaans now. I know enough to understand it but can't speak it myself without getting lost. So maybe I should make the effort.

Enjoy Mo! I am still thinking about getting a kitchen makeover but that will be on the back burner for a while ... it seems another vehicle will take precendence. I'm not doing as much cooking as I used to, am really tired of it all now, so ...

Still busy on our FT which will take forever because most of the info was lost in the lightning strike which fried the Mac some years ago, when backup was only partially done - learned my lesson! Will try to get to it again when winter arrives.

Major dental work to be done on Monday with the extraction of all my upper teeth. Diabetes is not for the faint-hearted - with eye issues, gum problems, neuropathy, and all the rest of the negatives
that are part of the package, including kidney failure. At times I could honestly just give up and say "too bad", throw all the insulin away, and just live life for as long as possible. But that would be only a couple of weeks at most, and very unfair to m family - so on we go. Smiling depression is very real!

On the plus side, we have wonderful family and friends. Knowing about the dental visit on Monday next, a dear friend arrived with four huge packs of frozen soup from the Cookhouse! Astonishing kindness. And the dogs are a delight and make us laugh every day!

And best of all, looking forward to a visit from our son and grand-daughter on the 27th - magic!
