But being the big year, here's a quiz anyway, see how many you know: 1. What are the two official languages of Finland and what is a third language that has been official? 2. How much is the population of Finland? 3. How many presidents has Finland had? (including current) 4. In what team sport has Finland won more European Championships than any other country? (besides silly sports invented in Finland) 5. Alaska and an area in north tip of Delaware, southeast Pennsylvania and west tip of New Jersey (along Delaware River); what connection do these two places of USA have to Finland? 6. How many times has Finland won ice hockey world championship? 7. What Finnish band consists of Ville Valo, Mige, Linde, Burton and Kosmo (replacing Gas Lipstick from the longest/best known line-up)? 8. World Rally Championship (for drivers) has been raced 41 times; how many of those have been won by Finnish drivers? 9. What electronics brand is named after a town in Finland? 10. What connects Peter III of Russia (1728-1762) and prince Frederick Charles of Hesse (1868-1940)? (hint: answer includes term "could have" or "almost") 11. What video game franchise is the main product of Finnish developer Rovio? 12. How many Finns have won Nobel prize? (including the Economics prize, excluding R. Granit who had become Swedish citizen at time of receiving the award for medicine) 13. What year did Finland host Olympics? 14. How many Finnish drivers have won Formula 1 (drivers') championship? (I will also accept another answer if it includes explanation why it's right) 15. What year was Finnish Civil War fought? 16. Of what sport developed in America have Finns come up with an altered version played (almost) only here? 17. Who is the only Finnish director with notable Hollywood career? (hint: he has 5 nominations of Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Director) 18. British attack on southwestern coast of Finland, here known as "Åland War", was part of what larger war? 19. How many times has Finland won Eurovision Song Contest? 20. How many countries in world are larger by area than Finland?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Wed, 06 Dec 2017 16:55:33 +0000 Re: Independence Day Quizhttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p106742,from=rss#post106742https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p106742,from=rss#post106742I won't do a new IDQ this year, because: 1. not many people around here 2. there's the 2014 (country names) nobody has tried yet (and most of 2012 first names) 3. I'm lazy 4. I'm going to have to come up with something big for next year... nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Thu, 01 Dec 2016 15:37:20 +0000 Re: Independence Day Quizhttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p105635,from=rss#post105635https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p105635,from=rss#post105635I just meant to point out I'm putting IDQ this year at Paradise Lost since nobody was here for now, but I notice no-one has yet tried last year's. Running out of ideas (and enthusiasm), I'll just do a little one this year. The following are Finnish names for countries; take a wild guess what these countries are: 1. Itävalta 2. Sveitsi 3. Tanska 4. Ruotsi 5. Yhdysvallat 6. Puola 7. Saksa 8. Norja 9. Venäjä 10. Kalle is a very common name, originates to Karl>Kaarle>Kalle - but also old Finnish Kalervo. My late uncle was Ilmari, name straight from Kalevala and our mythology. Sakari comes from Zachary You should've known we write Tony with I as Tommy has become Tomi :) Titta and Heli are female.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 07 Dec 2013 18:08:03 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p101451,from=rss#post101451https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p101451,from=rss#post101451So which were right and which were wrong?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sat, 07 Dec 2013 14:33:19 +0000 Re: Independence Day Quizhttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p101450,from=rss#post101450https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p101450,from=rss#post10145013/19 right, Petal. Time for another independence day quiz; this time about Finnish names. In Japan Tomi (that's my name if someone didn't know) is a female name. This got me thinking, do some names have a universal "sound" so that similar names might be associated to one or other sex in cultures which are in no way connected? Unlikely idea, and impossible to test here as we are very much connected, but let us have a quick game inspired by that thought. I'm putting here a list of usual Finnish first names and I'd like you to guess are they male or female. Just copy the list and mark each M/F. Some may be obvious, some may be trick questions (in this context) and hopefully at least of few you'll have no clue of and have to guess by hunch. Though maybe Icelandic would be the most accurate choice. 2. (to hit) upper granny Score in upper corner; originally hockey term, now also in footy. Further version: upper granny sings. 3. The Lions Our natinal hockey team; as I said before from our coat of arms. 4. to take (someone) behind sauna To kill/slaughter; mostly figuratively, most commonly in "someone should be..." Behind sauna was the traditional place to slaughter animals: near but out of sight and handy to go wash yourselves after. 5. to take (someone) out to coffee Trick defence and/or goalie (completely); in any suitable sport. 6. to ice-fish Being about to pass out or fall asleep, particularly due drinking. From the position (sitting, leaning forward) and nodding of head which sort of resembles the fishing hand motions. 8. to go yo-yo To hang yourself. We are after all the top suicide nation of western world. 9. The Great Owls National footy team. Comes from few years back when one bird came to sit upon goal during team practice. (There are increasingly many "city owls" in Helsinki in recent years.) Also "Hyypiä" is an old name for Great Owl (Sami Hyypiä? Anyone remember? Played in Liverpool.) nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 17 Dec 2011 01:32:43 +0000 Re: Independence Day Quizhttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92822,from=rss#post92822https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92822,from=rss#post928221, 4, 6 and 8 aren't from sports. 7: "ruusperi" is Finnish twist of Swedish pronounciation of Rosberg, originally from our 1982 F1 champion Keke and nowdays his son Nico; word for someone speeding or generally driving fast 10: Oviedo's missile & Kerpen's schoolmaster are Alonso and Schumi; for some reason we almost only have nicknames for non-Finnish drivers Any more guessing on the rest?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Sat, 10 Dec 2011 22:37:45 +0000 Re: Independence Day Quizhttps://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92776,from=rss#post92776https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92776,from=rss#post92776No, but it's "Lions" for same reason: a lion in our coat of arms.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Kaunisto)Wed, 07 Dec 2011 20:39:53 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92774,from=rss#post92774https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92774,from=rss#post92774The Lions are us (me)(Brits) i think (3 Lions) nondisclosed_email@example.com (Wipeout Star)Wed, 07 Dec 2011 19:22:24 +0000 Re:https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92770,from=rss#post92770https://banythinggoes3.runboard.com/p92770,from=rss#post92770Then I can't figure any of them out.
