A victory against sexism

Andy Gray and Richard Keys are the faces of Sky Sports football over here in the UK, but that's changed now as there has been a storm brewing over their apparent sexism.

It's come to light over the last two days that these two dinosaurs are no good, sexist twonks who judge people on their gender. The game between Wolves and Liverpool was broadcast on Sky this weekend with those two on it, it soon came clear that one of the linesmen was female. Reminiscent of the Brown bigot fiasco they forgot to turn their microphones off during one of the advert breaks when they made some dodgy comments that can be heard here. There have been other videos leaked where Gray grumbles when he first hears that a female is an official for that game and another where he puts his microphone down his trousers and asks a blonde, female presenter to get it out for him while she pulls a disgusted look.

The comments made are inexcuseable, there is no gene that makes women incapbale of being an official during a football match. I had hoped that views expressed by those two buffoons were history, but evidently this is not the case. It goes without saying that women should have equal opportunities in any career without the need for snide comments and poor jokes at their expense. The right whingers have been at it as usual claiming the outrage to be 'politically correct nonsense' which should come as no surprise, as this attacks their supposed right to attack anyone they please without any repercussions. I have long suspected that the term 'politically correct' is often used to win over the undecided in a debate if the bigot is losing their side of the argument.

The Daily Mail is of course on the side of Gray and Keys claiming that men have a right to be sexist at a football match as it's a chance to let off steam while simultaneously attacking the 'loony left' as they often do saying that some men have laddish attitudes especially towards women and that they are being stifled out of society. Well tough, if they can't take it that it's no longer accepted to say that women should stay home and cook then that's their problem, they should realise that women are no different to men in all things except for an extra X chromosome. It's to be expected from this horrible paper though, they were the ones who created the term 'suffragette' as an offensive term to label women who wanted the vote, so they do have history.

Andy Gray has been sacked today and Keys might soon follow.

Leo, while I'm pleased that Andy Gray was sacked, I'm going to play devil's advocate in this debate.

On the one hand I agree that women should be allowed to be whatever they want to be, and to do whatever job they want to do but I think that the gender roles have become too blurred now and that society is losing out.

I'm not saying that we need to go back to the days when all women were fit for was the kitchen and rearing children, not at all. But I would like to see a return to a more feminine woman. I don't like the attitude that because they are able to work in every part of the formerly male world, they also have to behave like men in every other way.

I still find it attractive when a young woman uses her femininity to actually be a woman. I don't know if I've put that clearly but I think you get what I mean.

I agree Mo - some women are very aggressive these days and I know a lot of men feel emasculated around them. It's great that women have more freedom in the professional world but sometimes I think they're given positions just because they're women, as if companies have to prove to the world that they aren't sexist. And then they get a bit power crazy at times!

Having said that, and also not explaining myself very well, I agree with Leo too that the Andy Gray incident was uncalled for and very unfair on the young lass concerned. If someone is capable of doing a job and doing it well, their gender shouldn't really come into it. It sounds as though I'm contradicting myself but I'm really not lol!

I agree, people should be allowed to do any job they want to do without consideration about their age, skin colour, gender, sexual orientation and even religious affiliation.

The only criterion for the choice of candidate ought to be that they should be suitably qualified and able to do the job.
