I think we actually agree more than we disagree.
When someone did try to break in here, the "pointy ears" is exactly what drove them away.

Re: Again the question of gun ownership rears its ugly head
It's always the few nutcases that do something stupid like with the recent killings in Arizona, or the Columbine shootings, that people get all up in arms against guns & try to enact new gun control policies, but the way I see it is if these psychos didn't have access to guns, they would just use knives or baseball bats or whatever else they can get their hands on. There will always be psychos out there. It's best that we are able to carry weapons in the event that some whacko tries to do something stupid. There be a many crazies out there ya know.

Re:
True, but you can run from a knife, a baseball bat or other handheld weapon, you can't run away from a bullet.
I have no problem with responsible, honourable people having guns. I do have a problem with every crazy being allowed to own again without questions being asked.

Re:
I see on the news this morning that they're now going in to the use of language and the effect it has on certain people - call them "crazies" if you like, but they're fanatical extremists. Seems to be almost like subliminal advertising and much was made of the Tea Party cross-wire dots on Democratic areas to be "targeted" - bulls-eyes as in dart boards or practise shooting ranges were also used on maps. Interesting.

And that stupid Palin woman is all over it.
I see that some idiot said that the little girly wasn't much of a loss because she would have grown up to be a "bleeding heart liberal" anyway. Disgraceful.

Re: Again the question of gun ownership rears its ugly head
The media tried to imply that he was a tea party type, right wing dittohead, and they still are trying desperately to make that connection, however in reality they find that his favorite books were "Mein Kampf" and "The Communist Manifesto", and people that knew him personally said he was very left wing.
The problem with adding more gun control is that it will make it harder for people who use guns responsibly, while those who don't will just buy the guns off the black market anyway.

Re: Again the question of gun ownership rears its ugly head
I wouldn't say that Mein Kampf makes him left wing, not at all, after all most sources I have come across in the past label Nazism as a form of fascism.
I would say that he was a psychotic maniac who had severe mental health issues and that's the primary reason for his killings. I think he only listed those books for shock value and it would be foolish to label him under any ideology.

Re:
It annoys me that gun laws, or any other, are suddenly and dramatically changed because of single incident, often caused by one person. There should be logical and rational basis on how this kind of laws are written; not as a forced reaction to calm down the public (before next elections).
Few years ago Finland had third most civilian owned guns per capita in the world. Then two school shooting; now gunlaws are tighter than in most of EU. There was even a temporary situation when it became impossible to get a licence when government tried to make a doctor's statement compulsory for it and doctors' union systematically refused, saying they could be then held responsible.
Here's a detail about Finnish gun laws: you must report a purpose for the gun: hunting, sport, collecting, etc. "Selfprotection" is not a qualified purpose. You can't own a gun here to protect yourself.

Re: Again the question of gun ownership rears its ugly head
The shooter definitely is just a psycho with some serious problems. It just aggravates me that the media makes every effort to put the blame on talk radio and talk radio personalities, rather than the one person who really is to blame. The shooter.
The media is intent on trying to persuade the general public into thinking that talk radio is evil and the Fairness Doctrine needs to be enacted, which it does not, but you can bet the government will try.

Re:
You need to have loud and out-there media, free to report and to comment on whatever the news of the day is.
Most conservative types want the media to be stifled, that's just wrong but at the same time I accept there are some things you really don't want idiots to know about. Like the secret codes and bank account numbers.
You all know how I feel about guns. I don't think that they are necessary for personal protection, because as we know only too well in SA, they are more often an invitation to be attacked, and to be killed with your own gun than not.
But at the same time, people who shoot for sport, hunters etc, should be allowed to own them, but there should be some sort of test, and compulsory training involved. Idiots like this guy should simply not have access to them.
