Ski jumping

Along motorsports and ice hockey, ski jumping is one of the great sports in Finland. This is due to our glorious history in the sport, which results largely from the fact that there's really only five major countries in ski jumping (others being Norway, Germany, Austria and Japan).

Today starts the Four Hills Tournament.
While Olympics and world championships are the most important events, this tournament (known in Finland as "mäkiviikko", hill week) has a special status. It's like Monaco in F1, a unique event with more important history than hardly anything in the sport.
Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Bischofshofen are well-known names to every Finnish sportsfan.

It doesn't look very good for Finland this year as our great star Janne Ahonen retired after last season. But this tournament has had unexpected winners before.

Re: Ski jumping

After two hills it seems this'll be between Swiss Simon Ammann and Austrian Wolfgang Loitzl.

Only if both fail will another Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer and Finland's hope Harri Olli have some chance.

Olli is the bad boy of Finnish ski jumping. Drinking and wild partying, minor traffic violations, missing practices and enough war with the management to have him thrown out of national team for a while.
Not the kind of behaviour we're used to seeing from our jumpers... at least not since Matti Nykänen.

Winter Olympics are next year.

Biggest thing this year is world championships.
I notice there'll be first time ever women's ski jumping.

In the end Loitzl won the tournament clearly, Ammann barely staying second before Schlierenzauer.
Best Finn Olli was 7th, but overall promising competition for the young team Finland.

Anyway good for Loitzl, he's been jumping for ten years with no personal success and now this great victory.
Also notable is Dimitry Vassiliev in 5th place total, showing Russia is strongly returning to the sport after decades. After all he won every Finnish, Norwegian and Japanese jumper.

In Vancouver to be precise. A perfect location methinks.

The season is on again and it doesn't look very good for Finland. Our hopes this winter are again Harri Olli and the great champion Ahonen returning from retirement for Olympics.

2009–10 FIS Ski Jumping World Cup

Looks like Austria is absolutely supreme this year (once again).

I love watching winter sports and I'm really looking forward to the Olympics ... with our climate though we don't see anything much at all, unless it's something like the Olympics, and so we aren't familiar with all the different sportsmen in the various categories and teams.

The ski jumping is always so exciting, and I love the bob-sledding as well, and curling.
