Boxing

Missed the name of the second guy but someone called Roy Jones is fighting him somewhere in America today.

What weirdos! All this acting and idiocy ... they showed a clip of them both standing around in their underwear and then standing face to face sort of staring each other down - so staged and posed and pathetic. And then the Jones guy started spouting a whole lot of rubbish and sounded quite loony to be honest. Maybe previous knocks to the head have done something to his grey cells.

How is it possible to take this sort of thing seriously? Does anyone still enjoy or bother to watch this sport - seems it ought to go to the comedy thread on TE.

The other guy is Joe Calzaghe, he won British sports personality of the year. The acting they do is supposed to psyche each other out, it's supposed to be a mind game as well as 'entertainment.'

I see the Welsh guy won, and it went the full rounds. The commentators were saying that if it had been in England or Wales, the fight would have been stopped because Jones had such a bad cut to his eye that there was blood absolutely everywhere.

I really can't see what pleasure there is in beating someone to a pulp but hey, different strokes and all that.

I wish we got more boxing, only few fight a year in TV. Hopefully we'll see trying to regain title.

Nope, Amin Asikainen took the second loss of his career. For six rounds he stayed pretty even with german Khoren Gevor, but all it takes is one bad round.

Not a very stylish match. Asikainen tried to keep distance (being taller) and Gevor pushed in close where Asikainen could only tie.

Can get quite ugly, true. :injure:

From the Marquess of Queensberry rules:
quote:

A man hanging on the ropes in a helpless state, with his toes off the ground, shall be considered down.

46-year old Evander Holyfield gave a good fight for WBA Heavyweight title, going full 12 rounds against russian Nikolai Valuev and he only lost on majority decicion (one judge scored draw).
That's damn well against a man who's heavier, 13 years younger and over 20cm bigger.

Currently all the five major heavyweight titles (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, IBO) are held by boxers from former Soviet countries, with Wladimir Klitschko as IBF, WBO and IBO world heavyweight champion and his brother Vitali as WBC champion.
