Tonight The Killing, one of Kubrick's early films.

Bunraku

Nice action film, kind of like Sin City without guns.

Just watched American Ninja.

Another reminder of why I hoard things: I recorded that film around 25 years ago and it hasn't been shown on TV since.
Although that's one of the earliest, I'm sure I have dozens of movies and program on VHS of which I can say the same.
Then again, I do have over hundred tapes... emoticon

Picked the latest Bond (Spectre) from library, will watch that some day.

At sunday there'll be German silent classic Dr. Mabuse, have to watch that.

Right now nothing on TV and I'm too busy with internet and stuff anyway...

Second part of Dr. Mabuse comes next sunday and the sequel week after that. I do love the old Germans.

SPOILERS FOR 007 SPECTRE COMING!! emoticon

Just watched Spectre and... it just has too much in it. There are several elements any of which alone would've been enough for a Bond film:
- return of Spectre and Blofeld
- internal things of British intelligence (that was a good fresh element in Brosnan's last two Bonds, but as it's been now used in 5 of 6 last films, that's overdoing it)
- getting personal on Bond (family history); when you pull something like this it should be the major focus of the movie. It worked for Skyfall, but another film right after was bad move
- connecting plot from 3 previous movies - something that has never been done before

When you have 4 that major concepts, it's far too much. 2 can barely be done, but this had feeling of "Let's make the biggest and most awesome and incredible Bond film ever!"
And this also made the style inconsistent. There was much imitation and references to bring the Connery Bond feel - needed for Spectre/Blofeld to fit in - but the intelligence/political stuff and going personal for Bond connected to the last 3 films (as did the plot). And the previous Craig Bonds have been something completely different.

So Spectre is a big pile of everything you can stuff into a Bond film (or dozen) and tries to live out of nostalgia, but can't really pull it off.
It also messes up Craig's Bond as character after previous films, as different as they are, had been able to have some consistency. With this thrown in as fourth, Craig is no longer like Brosnan who was certain kind of Bond, but more like Dalton whose films had entirely different style and feel.

M - the great Fritz Lang classic.

Last night 2016 "Fritz Lang", a semi-fictional film about making of M and real life murders that inspired it.

To end the Fritz Lang series: The Testament of Dr. Mabuse.

That was kind of disappointing, in no way as elegant and intelligent as first Mabuse (particularly Part 1) or M (from which a police character appears in this film).
The most interesting part of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse is that there's much room for interpretation and fan theories about what actually happens in the film - despite the film not really hinting that there's anything more to the story.

Because the theme of films now shown is 1920-1933 Germany, there won't be the last Mabuse film Lang made in his final years, over two decades later in West Germany (followed by various sequels). Since I can't expect to get that in my hands anytime soon, I will right now look some spoilers from wikipedia.

Hmm... would be interesting to see all the West German Mabuse films.

Last night I watched probably first non-final NBA game I've ever seen.
Didn't go well for Markkanen (the only Finn in the league) and Bulls.

emoticon as usual...
