Re: Sweden

After four months Sweden finally has new prime minister and cabinet - or rather the old ones.

In an arrangement that's confusing to me also, cabinet is formed by Social Democrats and Greens, but has backing of Left, Centre and Liberals.

That should be pretty shaky arrangement. Actually in power are two parties who took losses in the election and they stand on backing of, besides their usual partner, two centrist parties who have broken from the center-right alliance for first time since WWII.

Re: Sweden

Populist right is doing frighteningly well in recent polls.

Sweden Democrats are the most popular party for first time while simultaneously in Finland Finns Party, despite the moderate members breaking away couple years ago, has topped polls.

Thank goodness there aren't any elections coming soon.

Re:

Less than quarter of Swedes are confident of their military being able to defend the country.

The number is likely to rise with latest news: an officer of over 10 years who has worked in various important positions has been found to have faked his CV and certificates. In fact, he hadn't even been able to enter actual officer training due "dishonesty". His certificate of graduation is signed by a non-existent colonel. Yet he's been able, among other things, to work in military intelligence on encryption keys, a top secret matter.
And... 2016 he was recruited to a leading position in a coast guard operation, but was fired for faking documents to get the position; at which point coast guard reported him to military and security police. But he is still on army payroll as we speak and was later chosen to head an operation in Mali, only now removed and suspended as a paper reported this affair.

The fake officer had served in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Mali, at times with rank of major - which requires additional courses beside the basic officer training, that he of course had never done either.

Swedish police has declared concluded investigation of 1986 murder of prime minister Palme - event that could be called pretty much the Nordic equivalent of JFK. However there was no new evidence and they concluded killer to have been a suspect who killed himself twenty years ago. Palme's son has said he believes the police, but there'll be theories ans speculation forever.
