Re: Re:

The funeral went by pleasantly yesterday. It was a very fitting and apt service. The choice of music, photo and the tribute were perfect.

Also met up with my great aunt who spoke of my suffragist great great grandma. She never went on marches, she couldn't as a mother of five, but she apparently sought out local sympathetic individuals and rose money for the cause and spoke up for it where she could. She was apparently not very political until her husband died at a relatively young age in the early to mid 1910s. When she had to provide for five children it made her more politically minded and made her realise that things were unfair for her and women like her. She had the money to give to the cause given that she was widowed to a man who apparently owned a few coal mines in the Doncaster area and was well thought of. When he was alive she was a housewife, but on her own she realised she needed and job and found it through buying new houses in Scunthorpe for the expanding steel industry and becoming a landlady and then through providing a taxi service during a time when cars were not common. My great aunt seemed gushing about her, she said she suspects that she liked her given that my great aunt was the only girl among three brothers (one my granddad). She said she remembers her grandma saying that she could be whoever she wants to be and don't let anyone tell her otherwise just because she's a woman before explaining how difficult she found striking it out on her own when many people refused to do business with her because of her sex. Strange times, hard to believe that this was only 100 years ago.

Re: Family History

Saw some old paperwork on family.
Turns out my grandfather was fourth child of six. Three of them died before their parents, in late teens and twenties.
Grandpa was only one who ever married or had children - and he too rather late.
Lots of bachelors in my family...

As I've been saying, I decided to ask Barry's cousin who's a professional genealogist to look into my family to see what she could find. She found my dad's baptism record, and his father's, and his father's and from there, the research got so big, she handed it over to me to get on with. It's almost a month later, and I'm overwhelmed with what I'm finding.
My first discovery was a forgotten president of South Africa, "Jim" Fouche, who it turns out shared a great-grandfather with my own father, through his mother, making them second cousins. Because of this, there is extensive research.
Now it turns out that several notable figures appear in the tree that has now grown to almost 2000 names, including some famous figures in history. So I'm going to be busy doing this for a long, long time.
