Yes thanks, all done. It took a long time... about 6 hours but that's because of our pathetic speed. Haven't had a chance to look at it properly yet but will take the tour later.

Not many differences, just a few tweaks that make things easier, but some things they've removed are silly. Like not being able to upload pics to facebook and twitter from inside the Finder.

There seem to be a few glitches with a couple of programmes we have - Family Tree isn't working properly and neither is Gemini2.
But I have a date with the iStore trainer next Tuesday so will take the Mac down and sort it then.

Are you using this software?

I've just opened mine, version 8, and it works perfectly.

I don't use Gemini anymore since I started storing my photos off the Mac on a hard drive, with only the latest ones in dropbox or in a "favourites" folder so I can use them as wallpaper and screensavers.

I don't keep duplicates of any files. A little obsessive now of making sure everything is filed properly both on the computer and on the hard drive. If I'm using something on another device, like my budget, I store it in iCloud and collaborate with the devices so they update the document across all the platforms.

I have to have a little rant where my DH's family can't see me ranting. Why is it that people go into denial about old age and its limitations? My Dh's cousin, who he hasn't seen in 50 years, is on a quest to uncover family history that no one in the family is actually interested in. It seems to me that it's only to satisfy her own curiosity, and that he reads just because it's there, but we don't have kids together so it's of very little interest to my family.

Next week she wants to drive to Pietermaritzburg, some 600 kms away from here, to peruse the archives there. She's asked him and his sister who is 81, to go with her. The reason she's asking him is so that he can share the driving because his sister can't drive all the way (duh! she is 81!). After this last weekend away, I'm coming to the conclusion that my days of long road trips are coming to an end. I'm still exhausted from the trip, the driving, the activities, and long late nights, and unusual food, and I don't think he should be doing this. Leaving here at daybreak, driving the whole distance, spending the day at the archives, then driving back again the next day.

I saw him forget to go to the loo, forget to take his medication, eating all the wrong foods, and battling to sleep comfortably after the long drive there. Now she wants him to do it two days running, without even making an effort to learn his medical needs. I'm not happy. He says he wants to do it, she's his "cousin" and he owes his family some interest. This after almost 40 years of them virtually ignoring him and only spending time with him when I've pushed it. I'm not happy!

After my rant last week, I've lost the fight. He's going tomorrow. Hopefully all will go well and he'll come home safe and sound. Apparently it's going to be raining cats and dogs there on Wednesday, I just hope he'll keep dry and safe.

Crazy - I hear you. But as long as he takes it slowly all should be okay.

Opinions please!

We had a new carpet laid last Friday and over the weekend, went to turn on the under-carpet heating, and it blew the earth leakage. Rang this morning to ask the guy to come and fix it, and he maintains that because he didn't install the heating bit, it isn't his responsibility.
Says that if that carpet is moved, things can go wrong.

Grrrrrr!

It's possible they cut a wire when they installed the carpet. If it was working before they put it in, they need to come back to check.

Petal thanks for having them visit yesterday. Himself was so happy to show off AV to his sister. He was exhausted last night, just fell into bed and slept and slept.

I need advice because I can't get this socialising thing down right. When we were away last week, actually two weeks ago almost, rather than pay for our own food and drinks when the bill came, the bill was simply divided between the eight of us, irrespective of what we ate. We were the only pensioners in the group, so also the only people on a tight budget. My question is this: if people in the group order an expensive meal and drinks, and you're drinking water and a toasted sandwich, why should the bill be divided among the group. By the same token, if people are going on a trip, and they invite you to come along, should you be expected to share the cost of the trip if you're merely going for their convenience, i.e. for instance you're driving the car for them?

I don't think so. I think you should pay for what you use, and if you didn't suggest going, or weren't part of the original idea to go, you shouldn't have to pay for the transport. So if I asked you to drive me somewhere, I should pay for your petrol. If you ask me along for my delightful company, I don't pay for the transport.

Hi gang!

Re the carpet heating, they came back to check ... now they're trying to find a reasonable quote for us to replace it, so I'm waiting. No rush!

It was so good to see Barry yesterday - wish you could have been there too. The whole of AV was buzzing with news of his visit! Wish he could have stayed for the John Tungay farewell tonight, he would really have enjoyed that. But hopefully it may be recorded and or videoed.

Sharing costs ... can be a tough one. Mostly we find that with our friends we all pay for ourselves, or otherwise if we do split the bill someone who has had prawns when we've had a starter, will offer to pay extra. I think rules should be confirmed and agreed, so to speak, before the meal is ordered. We often go out with Colleen and Trevor for breakfast, and we agreed long ago that we each have our own bill. When we go away with the kids it's different, we form a Kitty or purse, and all contribute an equal amount to what goes into it, topping up when needed. So this means petrol etc is shared equally along with tolls. It balances out, and with special family it doesn't matter if it doesn't!

Regarding the recent trip to PMB - no, they wanted Barry along to help with driving so as far as I'm concerned, they should have paid all fuel, toll fees, and also his accommodation and food for the duration. Glad I gave him some cheese scones, maybe saved him having to buy their lunch!!
