Re: Finland

I would explain what's going on in our politics, but right now I'm not sure myself...

Hjallis Harkimo, millionaire, owner of KHL team Helsinki Jokerit (until now; he's selling it), man who once sailed around the world solo, host of Finnish Apprentice and recently MP (after having been married to one) is quitting the Coalition party - making government majority in parliament extremely narrow, as they barely survived the breakup of Finns Party.

Harkimo is starting a new "movement" (with couple other notable media figures) which is not a party (at least technically), as he has become disappointed to traditional politics.

I have no idea what he's up to, but it adds another wild card to next year elections, which will be interesting after the implosion of Finns and recent record popularity of Greens.

A humpback whale was caught in fishnet at Finnish coast yesterday. Rescuers were able to release it unharmed.
They are very rare in Baltic Seas and even more so near Finland. Apparently this young one was a bit lost.

Bit of politics.

Foreign minister Soini (who is catholic) praised decision by Argentinian parliament to keep abortion banned.
Opposition is now asking, can foreign minister publicly state personal opinions that are opposite to government policy both domestically and internationally.
(99% certain this won't bring down the cabinet, as shaky as it is, as we have only half a year to elections.)

We're also having discussion about the role of president. Along last couple decades, president of Finland has been stripped from much of earlier powers. Aside certain specific things, president's main job is to "lead foreign policy (except regarding EU matters) in cooperation with cabinet".
President Niinistö has been very active to comment and discus various (domestic) issues, even arranging a meeting to settle things between unions and prime minister. Niinistö is also very popular, so his comments have much weight in that most don't want to publicly start arguing with him.
Now we are hearing in media a legal expert after another estimating whether president is acting within his legally set role.

...yeah, those are the worst political problems we're having. Finland is that good.

A stone age graveyard has been found to be much larger than previously thought. In the site originally found 30 years ago there are 40 known graves, but new estimates suggest up to couple hundred.

The graves are believed to be 6000 years old. They are located about 40km from coast; at the time coast would've been considerably closer.
The site is at the north end of Baltic Sea. Until now the area has been assumed to have had very small population at stone age, but this could make the graveyard largest of the era found in Finland, suggesting otherwise.
