Are humans the first civilization on Earth?
Was There a Civilization On Earth Before Humans?
This is about whether we could know if a civilization had existed on Earth millions of years ago.
So here are two questions: could modern science tell if there's ever been some level of sentient life before us and do you think there actually has?

Our species went through a few iterations before we became who we are. So it might be that it happened before. Unless we find some evidence, it's really just supposition. A little like the Big Bang might not have been the first universe like ours, it's completely possible that in previous universes there were sentient creatures who destroyed their own just like we are doing.

If there was a previous civilised species it probably wasn't as developed as humanity. We're already seeing evidence of plastic being lithified, which would give evidence of human civilisation for any future species. We have no such examples from previous species. As MO says, it's supposition until evidence comes to light.
The question does remind me of a dinosaur top trumps game which I had when I was young. It included a fictional dinosaur which was supposed to be what an intelligent dinosaur would look like if it evolved to fit our environmental niche. It happened to look like homo sapiens, but with green skin and lizard like eyes.

I'm not sure the actual official Top Trumps were ever sold here, but at late 80's generic copies became a huge school yard craze in Finland.
I have couple packs somewhere, I should dig out the F1 themed and do research on who are the drivers of the pictured cars.
