Johannesburg, South Africa

I'm in the process of selling my home in the mountain area of the eastern province of Kwazulu Natal, to move back to the province in which I lived until we retired in 2004.

Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city, and the business hub of the country.

The suburb we're looking at is one of the oldest, established in the days of the gold rush of the late 19th century, and one of the houses we're viewing was built at that time.

This is Johannesburg..

I'll update this thread from time to time.

Stupid computer copied the wrong link, and I posted it without looking. Apologies.

People should spell stuff out to me, I don't get nuances and hints. Just tell me.

Update on the move to Johannesburg.

We've made an offer on a house suspended until we sell this one, and we have until the end of May to do that. I'm marketing like mad, having to keep the house neat while people traipse through every day. There's also some urgency now the witch from the north has made moves to cause my son and his business partner to be homeless, so we're pushing it.

I don't wait easily. So I'm a bit impatient, and therefore irritable.

The birthday trip was wonderful. We had loads of visitors, lots of outings to eat, discovered places we can shop with pleasure, and some we remembered from when we lived there, others that aren't as good as they used to be.

I'm really looking forward to the move. This house feels like it doesn't belong to me anymore while I think of what I'm going to do with the new one.

We've sold our house. Now we're going through the process of acquiring all the legal documents to transfer it out of our name and the new one into our name. This is tedious in South Africa because it involves lawyers searching for all documents related to the house, including building plans showing any new additions to it since the last transfer. Then the lawyers have to ask the local council for documents to show that we've made all the taxes up to date. This can take six weeks because there's only one official in their offices doing this work, and every so often, they go on strike. So we wait until they have that certificate. In the meantime we have to get an electrician in to do a compliancy test and to approve the electric connections, easily done. A pest person has to inspect the property for invasion by species that can destroy the structure, also easily done. With brick buildings and aluminium outside structures, it's mainly the wooden windows they check and as that's part of the maintenance of the people who run the sectional title, not our problem.

Once they have these documents, they send them to the registration office where the papers go through ten stages of inspection to ensure that no one along the way is registering the property illegally. When it's registered, the moneys are paid out to all the people who've worked on the transfer, and the purchase price paid to the seller. From that they deduct the commission to the agents, and the fees for the registration process.

So we're expecting to move around mid-June.

In the meantime, our car is completely out of commission now. We're having to sell it for whatever someone who wants to fix it and use it is prepared to pay, and we have to shop online and otherwise rely on kind neighbours, or transfer services to schlep us wherever we need to go.

I would've preferred the car not to have broken down before I sold it, but that's the way it goes.

All the paperwork is signed. We're waiting for the building inspections to get done before we move in a couple of weeks. Just slowly winding things up here and it seems I'm going to inherit some of my ex-in-laws antiques to store in my house for when, or if, the kids want them. Not a problem as I'll have lots of empty space to fill with junk. At least in my care, they'll be looked after, not just left to fall apart as they have been in the care of people who don't know their history. So I'm moving with what we have here, and I don't know what else.

Two weeks from now we'll be on our way to the new place. We're all packed and ready. I'm passing time cleaning and messing around with all stuff on the computer that needs attention. Otherwise I just want the days to pass so I can get rid of the boxes that are dominating my life.
